¡Pura Vida! Costa Rica Trip Interest Meeting on 12/18
Do you have a student taking Spanish I (A or B) in the 2020-21 school year at SMS? If so, join Ms. Buitrago on Wednesday, December 18 at 6 p.m. in room 223 to learn about a spring 2021 trip to Costa Rica.

At Sedgefield Middle, Spanish classes are dedicated to preparing students to thrive in a global workplace and within a multicultural society. With that in mind, a group of students and educators will be participating in a global education initiative that will visit Costa Rica.

Space for the trip is limited, so the meeting on December 18 is mandatory for all those interested in traveling. Please contact Ms. Buitrago if you absolutely cannot attend.

Spartan Spotlight: Ms. Cynthia Dick
Student fan-favorite Ms. D has been an English and Language Arts (ELA) teacher at Sedgefield Middle since December 2012 – the same year, in fact, she became a teacher and moved to Charlotte. She currently teaches sixth grade and serves on the school’s AVID site team, the School Leadership Team and the Faculty Advisory Committee. She’s also the proud coach of one of our 2019-20 inaugural Odyssey of the Mind teams. Prior to teaching at Sedgefield, Ms. D was a technical writer for a public relations firm in Cary, NC.

“I moved from public relations to education because I felt my work was not making a difference, and it was very important for me to feel like I was making a contribution to my community,” she said. “I truly consider it a huge privilege to be an educator. Some days I have so much fun at my job I can't believe I'm being paid to do it. Some days are so tough I go to bed at 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. Every single day is a privilege, and I am grateful for the opportunity to influence and be influenced by these amazing young people.”

Clothing Needs for Scholars
Our wonderful school social worker, Ms. Bowens, has identified a need among students for some clothing necessities to keep them warm through the colder months. It’s the time of year for giving, so please sign up to donate specific articles of clothing. Any help is much appreciated and will be put to good use!

Cleaning Out Closets Over Break? Donate New Or Gently-Used Games to HAC
When inclement weather strikes, our scholars move indoors for HAC (recess) time. You can help keep the fun going inside by donating new or gently used games to play!

Examples of middle-school appropriate games include: playing cards, Uno, Jenga, Monopoly, Sorry, Trouble, chess and checkers.

Please send your donations to the front office to the attention of the PTO; games will be collected in the parent room. If donating gently used games, please ensure all pieces are included.

Questions? Contact Kiley Thiel.

Club Volunteers Needed - Sign Up Today!
Clubs are a great way for scholars to work with different peers and learn new skills...and a phenomenal way for staff members to build relationships with scholars. SMS is excited to offer over 20 clubs to our scholars! The clubs range from academically-based clubs to sports-related. Scholars will be in the same club for one semester and may choose a new club in January.

We welcome any support from our parents and community members to assist with the clubs. If you are interested, please sign up here . Be sure to include your e-mail and phone number to receive updates. Please note: all volunteers must be cleared CMS volunteers; this must be done on a yearly basis.
