Celebrating SMS on Valentine's Day
Nothing says "we love and appreciate you" quite like a delicious meal! On February 14, the SMS PTO sponsored a Valentine's Day luncheon for teachers, staff and administration. Thank you to our community partners at The Fresh Market for supplying sandwiches, dessert and all the trimmings.

On Valentine's Day and every day - thank you to the SMS community for supporting and guiding our scholars!
Mr. Turner's Announcement and Next Steps
As you have likely heard, our wonderful principal, Mr. Turner, has been offered a promotion to be the principal at Vance High School.  (Read Mr. Turner’s announcement here.)  This is an honor for him and shows what an excellent leader he has been at Sedgefield Middle School for nearly five years.

As we plan for the future, SMS PTO and SLT leaders met last week with our Central 2 Learning Community Superintendent, Tara Lynn Sullivan, to discuss the process of identifying and securing our next principal as quickly and seamlessly as possible.

CMS will invite teachers, staff, PTO leaders and SLT representatives to assist in the development of a principal profile, which summarizes the leadership qualities necessary to continue the great work in our school. Be on the lookout for a link to an online form parents can fill out to provide input on selection of our next principal; w e will receive more information from Ms. Sullivan in the coming days and weeks. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Sullivan at 980-344-7130 or SMS PTO leadership at .
Empowering Extraordinary at Work
Funds raised through Empowering Extraordinary are making a significant impact on our school and we appreciate your support through this past year's fundraising campaign. Recently, using your generous donations, SMS was able to purchase and distribute to classrooms a large shipment of math manipulatives, which increase hands-on learning in classrooms, provide resource books for teachers, offer innovative math puzzles for students, and expand the variety of ways we teach math in the classroom.

Thank you for supporting SMS and Empowering Extraordinary!
Linchpin of the Month Awards
Ms. Garcia, Ms. Marrero, Ms. Buitrago, Ms. Harris and Ms. Cathey (not pictured) were recognized last week as the SMS Linchpins of the Month.

Ms. Garcia and Ms. Marrero were honored for being integral to the front office and the "faces" of SMS to our school community. Ms. Buitrago was recognized for earning her national boards. Ms. Harris was commended for leading the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), hosting "Cup of Joe" each week and for earning a $5,000 grant for FBLA. Ms. Cathey was celebrated for being instrumental in bringing an after-school robotics club to SMS and for her role with Project Lead the Way in the district and across the country.

Congratulations one and all!

Each month this year, SMS recognizes the teachers, staff and administration that embody the school theme "Be a Linchpin." Based on the book "Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?" by Seth Godin, the Linchpin of the Month award will highlight those making a significant contribution to the school, students, staff, parents and the community.

Proctors Needed for EOG/EOC Testing
We're halfway through the year - which means it's never too early to start thinking about end-of-grade (EOG) and end-of-course (EOC) testing. We need volunteers to proctor the following exams:

  • May 27 - Reading EOG
  • May 28 - Math EOG/Math 1 EOC
  • June 2 - 8th Grade Science EOG

Help Boost Literacy by Becoming a Reading Buddy!
Are you interested in reading with one of our amazing scholars once or twice a week? Our Reading Buddies Program is an amazing program matching a volunteer with one of our scholars to read books on a weekly basis together. Helping to model good reading, the Reading Buddies program provides success in literacy, students often become more positive about their ability to read and may also improve their reading skills. The school will have a selection of books for the scholar and Reading Buddy to select from based on the scholar’s reading level.

The times and days will be based on your availability and the scholar’s schedule.

If you are interested in this amazing program, please e-mail Mrs. Courtney Pierce, our dean of instruction, at

All volunteers must be a registered CMS Volunteer.  Click here to register.

New Clubs Starting Soon - Sign Up Today to Volunteer!
Clubs are a great way for scholars to work with different peers and learn new skills...and a phenomenal way for staff members to build relationships with scholars. SMS is excited to offer over 20 clubs to our scholars! The clubs range from academically-based clubs to sports-related. Scholars will be in the same club for one semester and may choose a new club in January.

We welcome any support from our parents and community members to assist with the clubs. If you are interested, please sign up here . Be sure to include your e-mail and phone number to receive updates. Please note: all volunteers must be cleared CMS volunteers; this must be done on a yearly basis. Donate New or Gently-Used Games to HAC
When inclement weather strikes, our scholars move indoors for HAC (recess) time. You can help keep the fun going inside by donating new or gently used games to play!

Examples of middle-school appropriate games include: playing cards, Uno, Jenga, Monopoly, Sorry, Trouble, chess and checkers.

Please send your donations to the front office to the attention of the PTO; games will be collected in the parent room. If donating gently used games, please ensure all pieces are included.

Questions? Contact Kiley Thiel.
