COVID-19 School Closure
A Message from SMS PTO During School Closures
As you know, school closures ordered by NC Governor Cooper in response to COVID-19 (coronavirus) began yesterday, March 16. Closures will remain in effect until at least March 30.

Rest assured, the administration and staff at Sedgefield Middle is hard at work to help support and guide our students during this challenging time, and would like to thank parents and families in advance for their patience and flexibility.

Beginning today, Sedgefield will serve as a CMS feeding site for children ages 0-18 for breakfast and lunch during the school closure. Please see the article below for additional details.

Scholars without access to technology at home may come to the school today to pickup their Chromebook and charger. Please see the schedule below for pickup times.

If your child has left an essential personal item at school and needs it, such as glasses or medication, please contact the front office to make arrangements for an adult to pick up.

This is a time of great uncertainty for many in our community and here at Sedgefield. As more details unfold from CMS, we will continue to communicate how our school will act accordingly. Please continue to check your e-mail for both CMS and SMS communications. Additionally, please consider the following sources for regular updates and helpful information:

CMS District Update on COVID-19 (3/14/20)
As COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases increase across the state, Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all K-12 schools to close for two weeks, effective Monday, March 16, 2020.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed for students for at least two weeks beginning Monday, March 16. This includes the CMS before- and after-school program. We will work to keep school buildings open on Monday. We will provide more information to staff as we receive more answers from the state.

Given the Governor's decision, the CMS Board of Education plans to schedule a meeting to vote to return to the original school calendar.
The coronavirus crisis is an unprecedented community health concern. CMS executive leaders, in partnership with local and state officials, are developing plans to address these exceptional circumstances. These plans include feeding students and continuing learning using a virtual platform.

We understand that families and staff will be affected by this decision and we appreciate your patience and flexibility as we work to navigate the closure of schools.

In the coming days, parents will receive information about opportunities for students to continue learning. As decisions are made, information will be shared through our normal communication channels. We will continue to provide updates to questions families and staff will likely have. Many responses will depend on decisions at the state level.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience. We will communicate more details as they become available.

Academics and Digital Learning
SMS administration is working closely with CMS and the NC state officials to finalize and share a plan for continued instruction that will likely include a digital learning component. Thank you for your patience as the team determines the best path forward during this challenging time.
Chromebook Pickup Schedule
For students to take advantage of online academic activities that will be provided during school closure, computer access is essential. Work may be done on any computer, so if your household has devices available, you do not need to pick up a device. However, any student needing a Chromebook may come to the school today for distribution.

The distribution schedule is as follows:

  • 7th Grade: 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
  • 8th Grade: 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Anyone unable to arrive during their grade-level assigned time may come between 4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m.

If your student has any essential items needed from the school, such as glasses or medication, arrangements may be made with an adult for pickup.
