Hispanic Family Night a Big Success!
The first-ever Hispanic Family Night was held at SMS on Thursday, February 27. Nearly 30 of our parents and scholars enjoyed an evening - presented completely in Spanish - with dinner, how-to's on navigating PowerSchool and ParentSquare, information on planning for future careers, and so much more. Thank you to Sedgefield Middle supporter Grisel Fernandez for organizing and leading this fantastic event, and to the Caribbean Hut for providing the delicious meal!

Sixth Graders Participate in Paideia Seminars
Earlier this year, your Empowering Extraordinary donations facilitated a training for Sedgefield Middle teachers on increasing academic rigor through Paideia seminars. Last week, teachers shared their knowledge and led sixth grade students through their first Paideia seminars. On hand to assist was the CMS Advanced Studies Department and Dr. Terry Roberts, director of the National Paideia Center in Asheville, NC.

A Paideia seminar is a collaborative intellectual dialogue facilitated with open-ended questions about a text and can:

  • significantly improve achievement scores in reading and writing, especially among traditionally underserved populations;
  • improve student motivation due to increased student voice in an active environment;
  • create a more respectful school culture with fewer behavior problems.

Spartan Spotlight: Ms. Demeka Kimpson
Growing up in Charleston, Ms. Kimpson knew she’d one day be involved in the arts, either as a fashion designer, art teacher, or in her chosen profession as a band director. An educator for 21 years (15 of those spent at Sedgefield Middle), she teaches beginning, intermediate and advancing band students. Beyond her role as band teacher, Ms. Kimpson co-advises the SMS student government association and advises our TRI-M National Music Honor Society; she’s a member of the Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) committee; mentors new teachers through the National Association for Music Education (NAfME); and chairs the CMS Middle School Honors Band Clinic.

Ms. Kimpson describes the work she does each day at SMS with three words: “Loud, busy and fun!” She enjoys her role as the band teacher at SMS because she helps “children learn and develop the skill of playing a musical instrument. Band is a unique program that brings together students of all interests. In band, scholars also learn to work as a team and learn the purpose of developing healthy friendships that are based on trust, cooperation and unity.”

Principal Search Update
Working with Tara Lynn Sullivan, Central 2 Learning Community Superintendent, representatives from staff and parents participated in a meeting to develop the principal profile to find a replacement for Mr. Turner, who has begun his new role as principal at Vance High School. This profile helped serve as a guide through the screening process and we are in the final stages of this process with Superintendent Winston. Many thanks to the parent and staff leaders who participated in this process.
Additionally, the interim principal, Dr. Maureen Furr, has been meeting with staff, students, and parent leaders while at the school this week. The Learning Community and district team will continue to provide support for Dr. Furr and the Spartan Team.

Ms. Sullivan will continue to keep us updated as we move through this transition. Should you have any questions, please contact Ms. Sullivan at 980-344-7130 or SMS PTO leadership at .

Help Boost Literacy by Becoming a Reading Buddy!
Are you interested in reading with one of our amazing scholars once or twice a week? Our Reading Buddies Program is an amazing program matching a volunteer with one of our scholars to read books on a weekly basis together. Helping to model good reading, the Reading Buddies program provides success in literacy, students often become more positive about their ability to read and may also improve their reading skills. The school will have a selection of books for the scholar and Reading Buddy to select from based on the scholar’s reading level.

The times and days will be based on your availability and the scholar’s schedule.

If you are interested in this amazing program, please e-mail Mrs. Courtney Pierce, our dean of instruction, at

All volunteers must be a registered CMS Volunteer.  Click here to register.
