Principal Update with Ms. Miracle (4/24)
On Friday, April 24, Ms. Miracle sent out an update to SMS families with ways to support our scholars during remote learning. Click here to read the update in English or in Spanish. A Message from SMS PTO During School Closures
Remote learning for all grade levels at Sedgefield Middle resumed on April 20 and will continue through the end of the school year. Your scholars may find information on their schedules in Canvas. Please review the Remote Learning Plan article below for links to the complete schedule, as well as links for scholar and parent resources.

Should your scholar still need a Chromebook or an Internet hotspot, please reach out directly to your child's teacher, counselor and/or school principal.

Spartan Staff Appreciation week is coming up the week of May 4! Read the article below for a daily schedule of how you and your scholar can show - virtually! - our teachers and staff thanks and appreciation.

Spartan Staff Appreciation Week: May 4 - 8
SMS Staff Appreciation Week is coming up and, with our new virtual learning environment, we need YOUR help! Below are activities for each day of the week to let teachers and staff know how much we love, miss and appreciate them:

  • Monday, May 4 - STUDENTS fill teachers' inboxes with notes of appreciation and kindness.
  • Tuesday, May 5 - PARENTS send teachers your own e-mail messages of appreciation.
  • Wednesday, May 6 - STUDENTS, show your school spirit and sport your Spartan Wear!
  • Thursday, May 7 - PTO hosts an Amazon gift card giveaway for teachers and staff.
  • Friday, May 8 - ALL SMS STAFF are invited to write a poem or limerick about SMS; those who participate will be eligible to have their names entered into our raffle for a $100 Amazon gift card!
2020-2021 SMS PTO Board Update
The SMS PTO Nominating Committee has been working diligently this spring to identify members for the 2020-2021 board and they are excited to share the slate for the 2020-2021 PTO Executive Board. The slate will be presented for a vote at the upcoming General PTO meeting to be held virtually on Zoom on May 12 at 6 p.m. Stay tuned for meeting details. It's Not Too Late - Order a Yearbook by May 25!
Yearbooks for the 2019-20 school year are now on sale! Each yearbook features 100 color pages of our scholars' favorite memories.

Orders are due by May 25. Only 100 yearbooks will be produced this year and nearly half have already been ordered. Don't delay! You may  click here to order online. Cost is $25 per yearbook.

COVID-19 School Closure
Remote Learning Plan for Sedgefield Middle
Beginning on Monday, April 6, students at Sedgefield Middle School began a remote learning plan that provides instruction and guidance on new standards and content for the fourth quarter. The goal is to provide students access to instructional material to support the mastery of standards associated with each content area they are currently enrolled.

COVID Free and Reduced Lunch
Has your family income changed? It’s not too late to apply for Free or Reduced Price Lunch. Even if you have applied and been denied in the past, you can reapply online. Please  click here for the application. 

If students are approved for meal benefits or they attend a CEP school you could be eligible for additional services.

Student Self-Care Tips for Virtual Learning and Mental Health Crisis Resources
As your scholars work to get organized and create a schedule for the week, click here for some useful self-care strategies from our school counselors, Ms. Means and Ms. Sherer, that will help them get the most out of their virtual learning experience.

If you are in need of mental health support while at home, please access our SMS school counselor's page. There, you'll find information on how to contact our school social worker, Ms. Bowens, as well as our school counselors, Ms. Means and Ms. Sherer.

Additionally, Ms. Means has office hours Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Scholars may request time for a one-on-one or a group Zoom with friends. E-mail Ms. Means for the meeting ID and personal appointments.

School Closure Food and Meal Resources
CMS Grab and Go Meals
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is providing grab and go meals while schools are closed. Lunch (and breakfast for the next day) will be served in participating school - including Sedgefield Middle School - parking lots. Meals are free for anyone 18-years old and under. 
Meals are distributed Monday-Friday from 10:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. 

State Texting Tool to Access Food for Children
North Carolina parents who need food assistance for their children may text FOODNC to 877-877 to locate nearby free meal sites. The texting service is also available in Spanish by texting COMIDA to 877-877.

Additionally, No Kid Hungry NC has created a map of local school sites, community organizations and food assistance programs across North Carolina where families can access food. The interactive map can be viewed at and is updated daily.

Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry
Loaves & Fishes food pantry is offering food to anyone who needs it. If you need a referral to take advantage of this program, please e-mail Ms. Sherer, Ms. Means or Ms. Bowens.

Food Distribution Through Community Organizations
Following is a list of community organizations offering lunch and breakfast food distribution during the school closure:
Free Spectrum Internet Access
Charter Communications will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps. To enroll, call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households.
