A Welcome from our PTO President
SMS Students and Families -

I hope you have enjoyed your summer and are looking forward to the 2019-20 school year!

Our dedicated SMS staff and volunteers have been working hard over the summer to ensure a smooth start to our year, and to develop meaningful programs and activities for our students.

I am excited about the year ahead and feel fortunate to be part of this Spartan family that is committed to excellence. Thank you to our entire school community - our students, teachers, administration, families, community partners and volunteers - who make Sedgefield so special and unique.

If I can be of any assistance to you this school year, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am looking forward to a wonderful year for the Sedgefield Spartans!

Lindsay Jones
PTO President, 2019-20
Spartan Spotlight: Dr. Eric Tornfelt
Every now and then, the Spartan Express will use the Spartan Spotlight to introduce you to one of the special staff members at Sedgefield Middle. Even if you already know this person, we hope you will find out something new!

Dr. Tornfelt has been the assistant principal at Sedgefield for two years. He started his career 15 years ago as a social studies teacher at Mallard Creek High, then was an assistant principal at Piedmont Middle and Garinger High before joining Sedgefield. He holds a B.A. in political science from Furman University, an M.A.T. from UNC Charlotte and his Ed.D in Educational Leadership from Wingate University.

Volunteers Needed: SMS Audit Committee
Do you have a finance or accounting background? If so, we need you! SMS PTO is forming an audit committee for the 2019-20 school year. Members of this committee are responsible for the audits and financial reviews of the PTO. The audit committee will regularly review the PTO’s bank statements and supporting documents to ensure expenditures are consistent with the approved budget. The audit committee also conducts an annual financial review of the organization’s spending. Interested? Contact Lindsay Jones .
Empowering Extraordinary at SMS
The Sedgefield PTO is excited about the 2019-20 school year. Our school calendar is full of enriching activities and programming for our students, but we need your help! The Empowering Extraordinary Fundraising Campaign is our annual campaign that kicked off in Spring of 2019 to provide support for our school’s PTO, staff and administration.

Campaign contributions will fund two key areas that have been identified in partnership with Principal Turner:

  •  PTO operating budget to support student academic and enrichment: educational subscriptions, advanced teaching tools, after-school clubs, field trip scholarships, staff appreciation, and student recognition

  • Capital needs for the school: outdoor learning areas, hands- on science materials, an updated novel room, facility enhancements and more

These items are not funded by CMS  and will enhance the curriculum and educational experience of our students.

The campaign concludes September 30, so please consider giving today. We would like to see broad participation from all grades. No gift is too small and all gifts are appreciated.

Are you ready to Empower Extraordinary? Contributions can be made online or by check. Visit and pay via PayPal. Or, pay by check made out to: SMS PTO mailed to Sedgefield Middle School, Attn. PTO, 2700 Dorchester Place; Charlotte, NC 28209.
