Student Backpack Drive, September 16-27

Help make the 2019-20 school year a successful one for all of our Spartan scholars by donating a backpack during the weeks of September 16-27.

Donations of new backpacks in sizes medium or large may be sent in with your student, or delivered to the front office. Thank you for your donations!
Sign the Title 1 Compact by October 4
As part of the school-level parent and family engagement policy, each new school year SMS issues a Title 1 learning compact that outlines how parents, school staff and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. This Title 1 Compact outlines how the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help our scholars meet and/or exceed the state’s academic standards. The Title 1 Compact is reviewed annually in the spring with our school’s SLT committee.

We need 100% of our families - parents and scholars alike - to review, sign and return the Title 1 Compact to SMS by Friday, October 4. Scholars may turn in completed compacts in their homerooms.

Linchpin of the Month Award: August
Are you a linchpin - the kind of person indispensable to your customers, peers and organizations? Someone who can figure out what to do when there's no rule book?

Each month this year, SMS will recognize the teachers, staff and administration that embody the school theme "Be a Linchpin." Based on the book "Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?" by Seth Godin, the Linchpin of the Month award will highlight those making a significant contribution to the school, students, staff, parents and the community.

Congratulations to the August recipients of the Linchpin of the Month - the custodial team of LaShanna Young, Tammy Adams and Keith Chambers! They received the Linchpin of the Month award for working tirelessly over the summer months to prepare the SMS building and facilities for staff and students.
Volunteers Needed: SMS Audit Committee
Do you have a finance or accounting background? If so, we need you! SMS PTO is forming an audit committee for the 2019-20 school year. Members of this committee are responsible for the audits and financial reviews of the PTO. The audit committee will regularly review the PTO’s bank statements and supporting documents to ensure expenditures are consistent with the approved budget. The audit committee also conducts an annual financial review of the organization’s spending. Interested? Contact Lindsay Jones .
Empowering Extraordinary at SMS

The Empowering Extraordinary Fundraising Campaign is our annual campaign that kicked off in Spring of 2019 to provide support for our school’s PTO, staff and administration.

The Sedgefield PTO, in conjunction with Principal Turner, has identified key areas of opportunity to enrich and expand the educational experience of our Sedgefield Spartans. Your donation will help in the following ways:

  • PTO operating budget to support student academics and enrichment: educational subscriptions, advanced teaching tools, after-school clubs, field trip scholarships, staff appreciation and student recognition

  • Capital needs for the school: outdoor learning areas, hands-on science materials, an updated novel room, facility enhancements and more

All of these items are not funded by CMS and require parental and community support.

We have an aggressive goal of raising $100,000 . Currently, we have received $77,500 in donations. We need everyone's help to meet our goal.

We are asking you to consider a donation that is meaningful to you and your family as you consider the future of our new neighborhood school.

The campaign concludes September 30, so please consider giving today. We would like to see broad participation from all grades. All gifts are appreciated.

Contributions can be made online or by check. Visit  smspto.org/fundraising and pay via PayPal. Or, pay by check made out to: SMS PTO mailed to Sedgefield Middle School, Attn. PTO, 2700 Dorchester Place; Charlotte, NC 28209.

The Sedgefield PTO is a registered 501(c)(3) and may be eligible for a company match. Please check with your employer for details. Questions? Please e-mail Meredith Murchison at smsptofundraising@gmail.com .
