Student Backpack Drive, September 16-27

Help make the 2019-20 school year a successful one for all of our Spartan scholars by donating a backpack during the weeks of September 16-27.

Donations of new backpacks in sizes medium or large may be sent in with your student, or delivered to the front office. Thank you for your donations!
Sign the Title 1 Compact by October 4
As part of the school-level parent and family engagement policy, each new school year SMS issues a Title 1 learning compact that outlines how parents, school staff and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. This Title 1 Compact outlines how the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help our scholars meet and/or exceed the state’s academic standards. The Title 1 Compact is reviewed annually in the spring with our school’s SLT committee.

We need 100% of our families - parents and scholars alike - to review, sign and return the Title 1 Compact to SMS by Friday, October 4. Scholars may turn in completed compacts in their homerooms.

Spartan Spotlight: Ms. Janette Marrero, Bilingual Secretary
National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) recognizes and celebrates the contributions made by Hispanic and Latino/Latina Americans to the United States. During the month, we'll celebrate the contributions and heritage of our own Hispanic SMS staff and teachers in our Spartan Spotlight.

If you’ve ever visited the SMS front office, it’s likely you were greeted by Ms. Marrero. She joined SMS in the spring of 2018 and previously was a before school/after school program assistant at Berewick Elementary. In her current role, Ms. Marrero manages everything from the always-ringing phones and greeting parents and students, to assisting teachers and translating for our Spanish-speaking scholars.

Ms. Marrero was born in Manhattan, New York City and raised in New Jersey. Both of her parents are from Puerto Rico and immigrated to the United States in the 1960s. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Ms. Marrero lived in Puerto Rico for 25 years, raising all three of her children there. She moved to Charlotte four years ago.

Volunteers Needed: SMS Audit Committee
Do you have a finance or accounting background? If so, we need you! SMS PTO is forming an audit committee for the 2019-20 school year. Members of this committee are responsible for the audits and financial reviews of the PTO. The audit committee will regularly review the PTO’s bank statements and supporting documents to ensure expenditures are consistent with the approved budget. The audit committee also conducts an annual financial review of the organization’s spending. Interested? Contact Lindsay Jones .
Give Today - Empowering Extraordinary Ends on 9/30!

We have less than two weeks to go before the end of our Empowering Extraordinary campaign. Rest assured - there's still time to donate! Since the spring, we've raised  $81,000 of our $100,000 goal.  That means we have just $19,000 to go. With your support, we know we can do it!

Your generous donations will help ensure access to resources well beyond what CMS provides and will immediately impact our scholars by providing the following:

  • PTO operating budget to support student academics and enrichment: educational subscriptions, advanced teaching tools, after-school clubs, field trip scholarships, staff appreciation and student recognition

  • Capital needs for the school: outdoor learning areas, hands-on science materials, an updated novel room, facility enhancements and more

It's easy to donate! Contributions can be made online or by check. Visit  smspto.org/fundraising and pay via PayPal. Or, pay by check made out to: SMS PTO mailed to Sedgefield Middle School, Attn. PTO, 2700 Dorchester Place; Charlotte, NC 28209.
