Student Backpack Drive, September 16-27

Help make the 2019-20 school year a successful one for all of our Spartan scholars by donating a backpack during the weeks of September 16-27.

Donations of new backpacks in sizes medium or large may be sent in with your student, or delivered to the front office. Thank you for your donations!
Give Today - Empowering Extraordinary Ends on 9/30!

We have less than one week to go before the end of our Empowering Extraordinary campaign. Rest assured - there's still time to donate! Since the spring, we've raised  $93,000 of our $100,000 goal.  That means we have just $7,000 to go. With your support, we know we can do it!
Your generous donations will help ensure access to resources well beyond what CMS provides and will immediately impact our scholars by providing the following:
  • PTO operating budget to support student academics and enrichment: educational subscriptions, advanced teaching tools, after-school clubs, field trip scholarships, staff appreciation and student recognition
  • Capital needs for the school: outdoor learning areas, hands-on science materials, an updated novel room, facility enhancements and more
It's easy to donate! Contributions can be made online or by check. Visit and pay via PayPal. Or, pay by check made out to: SMS PTO mailed to Sedgefield Middle School, Attn. PTO, 2700 Dorchester Place; Charlotte, NC 28209.

The Sedgefield PTO is a registered 501(c)(3) and may be eligible for a company match. Please check with your employer for details. Questions? Please e-mail Meredith Murchison at .
Spartan Spotlight: Ms. Kimberly Garcia, Attendance Secretary
National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) recognizes and celebrates the contributions made by Hispanic and Latino/Latina Americans to the United States. During the month, we'll celebrate the contributions and heritage of our own Hispanic SMS staff and teachers in our Spartan Spotlight.

In her third year as attendance secretary at SMS, Ms. Garcia ensures all of our scholars are accounted for each day, processes notifications to parents, assists administration and staff, and translates for our Spanish-speaking students.

Ms. Garcia grew up in Virginia, but has lived in Charlotte since 2006. Her mother is originally from El Salvador; she immigrated to the United States when she was eight years old and settled in New
York. Ms. Garcia has visited her family in El Salvador nearly every year since the time she was four years old.

“I love visiting El Salvador, experiencing the simplicity of life there and the culture. My family is from a small town and I love how everyone knows everyone,” she said.

Spartan Scholar Selected for Festival in the Park Teacher Choice Award
This weekend at Festival in the Park, 8th grader Selah Ramos had three of her drawings on display. One of her drawings was selected for the Festival in the Park Teacher Choice Award. Her work, along with other students at the elementary, middle and high school levels, will be featured in the Superintendent Gallery from October 2019 - April 2020.

Congratulations, Selah!

Support SMS with a Spartanship
Do you own a family business, or know someone who does? Would you like to see your company's logo on our fields and in our gym as a proud supporter of Sedgefield Middle School? The Sedgefield PTO, in conjunction with the Hoplite Athletic Booster Club, are offering Spartanships to family corporations and local companies interested in supporting our school. Spartanships are part of the Empowering Extraordinary campaign and are a unique way to show your support. For more details, click here. The campaign ends on September 30.

Sign the Title 1 Compact by October 4
As part of the school-level parent and family engagement policy, each new school year SMS issues a Title 1 learning compact that outlines how parents, school staff and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. This Title 1 Compact outlines how the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help our scholars meet and/or exceed the state’s academic standards. The Title 1 Compact is reviewed annually in the spring with our school’s SLT committee.

We need 100% of our families - parents and scholars alike - to review, sign and return the Title 1 Compact to SMS by Friday, October 4. Scholars may turn in completed compacts in their homerooms.

Calling All Volunteers!
SMS has many opportunities for volunteer engagement. If you haven't already, sign up for these rewarding opportunities. Many positions can be handled from home, while others provide an opportunity to connect directly with parents, teachers, students and staff.

Link Your Harris Teeter VIC Card
Through Harris Teeter's Together in Education program, SMS has the opportunity to earn funding when you link your Harris Teeter VIC card. Cards must be linked yearly to benefit our school. Linking your VIC card is easy, quick and doesn't cost you a thing.
