Student Backpack Drive, September 16-27

Help make the 2019-20 school year a successful one for all of our Spartan scholars by donating a backpack during the weeks of September 16-27.

Donations of new backpacks in sizes medium or large may be sent in with your student, or delivered to the front office. Thank you for your donations!
Spartan Spotlight: Mr. Erik Turner, Principal
Mr. Turner has been the principal at Sedgefield Middle School for four years. An educator for more than 15 years, Mr. Turner previously was an assistant principal at Bruns Academy; a resident principal at Albemarle Road Middle School; a state program director for Citizen Schools of North Carolina; a middle school social studies teacher; and a grant project manager for Communities in Schools of Charlotte. Outside of education, Mr. Turner was once a fireman for the Charlotte Fire Department!

Mr. Turner earned a BA in history and education from North Carolina Central and a MA in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University. Each day as principal at SMS, Mr. Turner works to
inspire scholars and staff members. While there are a host of reasons he enjoys the middle school environment, Mr. Turner said the primary reason is “because middle school is such a pivotal developmental period in a child’s life. I relish the opportunity to positively impact the life trajectories of our scholars.”

Summer Assignments Due Friday
This is the week! Scholars in all grades have until this Friday, September 6 to complete their summer enrichment assignments. Assignments will be used as a project grade during the first quarter.

Volunteers Needed: SMS Audit Committee
Do you have a finance or accounting background? If so, we need you! SMS PTO is forming an audit committee for the 2019-20 school year. Members of this committee are responsible for the audits and financial reviews of the PTO. The audit committee will regularly review the PTO’s bank statements and supporting documents to ensure expenditures are consistent with the approved budget. The audit committee also conducts an annual financial review of the organization’s spending. Interested? Contact Lindsay Jones .
Coffee and Conversation
Thank you to all of the families that joined us for our PTO-sponsored parent coffee in the media center on Friday, August 30. Over coffee and muffins, we had back-to-school updates from Principal Turner and our PTO president, Lindsay Jones. Margaret Marshall, our district Board of Education representative, joined to help us kick off our new school year. CMS Executive Director of the Central Learning District, Acquanetta Edmund, also attended to offer support and congratulate the school on a smooth start after nearly two years of planning for the 2019-20 student assignment changes. Ms. Edmund was a member of the transition team comprised of parent volunteers, SMS administration and CMS leaders who prepared for this year.

Please join us for our general PTO meeting and curriculum night on Thursday, October 10 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Empowering Extraordinary at SMS

The Empowering Extraordinary Fundraising Campaign is our annual campaign that kicked off in Spring of 2019 to provide support for our school’s PTO, staff and administration.

The Sedgefield PTO, in conjunction with Principal Turner, has identified key areas of opportunity to enrich and expand the education experience of our Sedgefield Spartans. Your donation will help in the following ways:

  • PTO operating budget to support student academics and enrichment: educational subscriptions, advanced teaching tools, after-school clubs, field trip scholarships, staff appreciation and student recognition

  • Capital needs for the school: outdoor learning areas, hands-on science materials, an updated novel room, facility enhancements and more

All of these items are not funded by CMS and require parental and community support.

We have an aggressive goal of raising $100,000 . Currently, we have received $75,000 in donations. We need everyone's help to meet our goal.

We are asking you to consider a donation that is meaningful to you and your family as you consider the future of our new neighborhood school.

The campaign concludes September 30, so please consider giving today. We would like to see broad participation from all grades. All gifts are appreciated.

Contributions can be made online or by check. Visit  smspto.org/fundraising and pay via PayPal. Or, pay by check made out to: SMS PTO mailed to Sedgefield Middle School, Attn. PTO, 2700 Dorchester Place; Charlotte, NC 28209.

The Sedgefield PTO is a registered 501(c)(3) and may be eligible for a company match. Please check with your employer for details. Questions? Please e-mail Meredith Murchison at smsptofundraising@gmail.com .
