Principal's Message

Mr. Russell Petrocelli

Dear Spartan Community:

As I get older, it always amazes me how quickly the school year goes by…it is October and 10% of the school year is complete. I ask the students every month, “Have you accomplished 10% of your goals for this school year?” I told the students at the start of the school year, the academic year is a marathon and not a sprint. Pace yourselves well and you will be successful!

After a great start of the year, we head into a busy October and November. The Senior Class had their retreat, and the school community enjoyed a visit from the Board of Trustees of the Tri- County Scholarship Fund. It is always an honor and pleasure to welcome our Bishop, Kevin Sweeney, to the school as he said Mass for the school community on Friday, October 18, and we are hosting what promises to be a very successful Open House on Sunday, October 20 with almost 200 families pre-registered to attend.

We also celebrate the success of our Fall Athletes…come by and watch a game and share in the

excitement and success of our student-athletes!

Everything that we do here hopefully leads to the same end result – student success! If you are a current parent/guardian of a student and want to talk about your child’s academic progress, please plan on attending the Parent Conferences scheduled for November 12, starting at 2:15 PM.

Please visit this newsletter on a regular basis to be brought up to speed on the happenings across the campus. If you are a graduate and are in the neighborhood, please stop in and say hello.

We are looking forward to seeing you at Parent Conferences on Tuesday, November 12, 2:15

PM to 4:00 PM.

Campus Ministry & Theology

Our Senior Spartans had an amazing Retreat on October 3, 2024 at the Shrine of Carlos Acutis at St. Dominic’s Church in Brick Township. It was a day filled with spiritual growth and enlightenment. Blessed Carlos Acutis, pray for the class of 2025!

As the month of October continued, the theology department along with Fr. Frank held a “World Day Rosary” and were blessed to celebrate Bishop’s Mass with Bishop Sweeney on the feast day of St. Luke, the Evangelist.

The Spartans also embarked on their first Midnight Run with Mrs. Jean Caughey and Ms. Dana Sevean. The students headed into New York City during the late evening hours and distributed food and clothing items to those in need. It was such a humbling experience for the students at DePaul Catholic High School. “For I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Matthew 25:36

As we moved forward into the month, the campus ministry and theology department along with the chaplains Fr. Frank, Fr. Joey, and Fr. Steve continued helping the students grow in faith by reciting the Rosary, leading grade level masses, running a “Baby Drive” to benefit Several Sources in Ramsey and The Passaic Neighborhood Center for Women.

October has been a very faith-filled month full of service, prayer, and love.

Stay tuned for next month's All Saints Day Mass on November 1st at 9:45 am. All are welcome!

The 2024 Spartan Invitational kicked off on a gorgeous October afternoon, sponsored by the North Jersey Country Club. The greens were crisp and fresh, and all of the Spartan golfers were eager to hit the tees. The day began with a beautiful buffet lunch, followed by a round of 18 holes, an elegant social hour, and dinner to cap off the evening. Congratulations to the winning team consisting of Joe Lozito '76, Art Alferi, Mario Ferraro, and Mike Lembo. Mike Powers '83 received the Closest to the Pin award, while Chris Donnelly '00 received the Longest Drive award. Thank you to North Jersey Country Club for hosting such an amazing Spartan event, Coach Joe Lennon for organizing a fantastic day for all Spartan golfers, and everyone who participated in this year's Spartan Invitational. Your support of DePaul Catholic has a huge impact on all students, faculty, and staff. Thank you for being such an essential part of the Spartan community!

This year's 9 & Dine event hosted by Coach Joe Lennon was a fantastic experience for all participants! Every golfer had the opportunity to play a round of nine holes on Preakness Valley Golf Course's beautiful course. The event was followed by a spectacular dinner provided by Preakness Valley with many alumni in attendance and culminated with individual stories delivered by DePaul Catholic students, Matteo Brown, Olivia Ciampa, Ashley LoMonaco and alum Isaiah Boone, and faculty member Mrs. Jean Caughey. We'd like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s event. Your donation to DePaul Catholic significantly impacts our students, faculty, and staff. Thank you for supporting our Spartan community!

The Class of 1974 gathered at DePaul Catholic to commemorate their 50th class reunion. At halftime of that Friday night's DePaul versus Seton Hall Prep football game, all classmates received a "Welcome Home" recognition on the field from all spectators.

The next afternoon, the class gathered in the Chapel for a mass service. The class's famous DePaul Catholic Choir Group, which included Dennis Atieh, Mary Gorman-Strawbridge, Claudia Haertel Peterson, Helen Marie Hardgrove, Owen Kelly, Kevin Monahan, Sheila Wikiel Macchia, and Marta Abascal-Jackson, performed numerous hymns for the ceremony with Father Joey Mactal's blessings.

Afterwards, the class regrouped as classmates in the cafeteria, where they celebrated their 50th reunion together all night! Congratulations to the Class of 1974 on their 50th reunion at DePaul Catholic!

Interact Club's first Sleep Out for Covenant House was a moo-ving experience! Participants heard first-hand stories from Covenant House residents and were visited by Covenant House partner, Chick-Fil-A! The group took part in Praise and Worship, Covenant House programming, candlelit Mass with Fr. Frank, movie viewing and sleeping out on the cold, hard ground. Interact raised more than their goal thanks to generous donations from family, friends, Wayne Rotary and local restaurant partners, Positano, Outback, Chick-Fil-A, Wayne Ale House and Pizza, Carvel of Wayne and Carvel of Lincoln Park. Thank you to all Interact Officers and Covenant House Ambassadors for helping to coordinate our first Sleep Out! Congratulations to Interact Club President, Ashley LoMonaco, National Merit Commended Student! We are so proud of you!

Thanks to DP alum and Wayne Lions Club past president, Judy Gorski, DePaul Catholic's newest club, the Leo Club, became official on September 20, 2024. In attendance at this Charter Celebration were some VIPs: District 16N Leo Chair and Parsippany Lions Club President Pratap Jayakar, First Vice Governor SuzAnne Pacala, District Governor Barbara Corsaro, Past International Director Bob Moore, Former District Governor Lou Corsaro. The Leos are part of the Wayne Lions Club and Lions Club International, the largest service organization in the world. Since its inception, the club now consists of 25 members, who will participate in a variety of events throughout the year from non-profit walks to camp cleanups to volunteering at Night to Shine and lots of things in between. The student officers are President Katelyn Guinto, Vice President Eryn Rubenacker, Secretary/Membership Officer Kaitlyn Blum and Treasurer Hayden Tully.

SAVE THE DATE! DePaul's Holiday Celebration of the Arts will be held on Tuesday, December 10 from 7pm to 9pm.

Art Club is off to a great start!

The 24-25 Art Club recently had its first meeting. The art room was packed with enthusiastic art lovers! They discussed possible ideas for ways to share their artistic talents with the greater DePaul community for different seasons throughout the school year. Their first project is a collaborative leaf drawing using colored pencils. At their next meeting they will complete the drawings and assemble them into one large creation! Look for the finished product to be on display somewhere in the school building.

For more information about Art Club or the Holiday Celebration of the Arts, please contact Mrs. Carnevale at carnevalem@depcaulcatholic.org.

During Hispanic Heritage Month the students from Mrs. Dicksen's Spanish II classes researched and considered personalities of hispanic background in the U.S. that had helped shape our great nation. Check out some of their projects below!

DePaul's girls volleyball team held a Breast Cancer Awareness service event for the three teams. The girls did a wonderful job writing letters to women who have just recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Together they wrote about 25 letters to send to the "Girls Love Mail" organization. Special thanks to Mrs. Caughey for her help!

On September 26th, DePaul Catholic students from the Right to Life Club participated in New Jersey's first March for Life in Trenton. Seniors Giancarlo Scirocco, Lorenzo Nieves, Gavin Bickford, Olivia Ciampa, Steven Fiorendino, juniors Derek Zammit and Claire Link, and sophomore Kaitlyn Bradley had the opportunity to meet with Bishop Sweeney, hear from pro-life speakers, and advocate for life as students. Thank you to the DePaul Catholic Right to Life Club leaders who attended and demonstrated how the beauty and dignity of every human life is valued.

The Class of 2025 got up extra early and huddled together to watch the sun come up at their Senior Sunrise; a beautiful morning spent making memories with great company.

Order up- there's a new chef in town! Have you seen what Chef Joe and the new kitchen crew are cooking up for DePaul? Be sure to follow them on instagram for a look at the daily specials and mouthwatering dishes they're serving up!
