Spartanburg Community College Announces Mr. Mark Smith as New Dean of Technologies

Spartanburg, SC - Today, Spartanburg Community College leadership announced that Mark Smith has been named the College’s new Dean of Technologies, replacing the retiring Jeff Hunt.

“Over the last several years, Mark Smith has been an indispensable asset to Spartanburg Community College. In his capacity first as Program Director of our Automotive program and then as Department Chair of Industrial Technologies, Mark has worked tirelessly to strengthen and promote strong programs and even stronger student outcomes,” said Dr. Michael Mikota, President of SCC. “Mark’s deep knowledge and experience in developing curriculum optimized to meet the demands of local and regional industry is what uniquely sets him apart. I have the greatest confidence in his leadership and look forward to working closely together to continue the rapid student and community focused growth that is accelerating our School of Technologies and ultimately our regional economy.”

“I am excited about the opportunity to take the reins over SCC’s School of Technology and to do so at such a transformative time in the College’s history,” said Mark Smith. “I look forward to working to ensure SCC meets both the needs of our students and industry in our region and beyond. It’s my hope that we can continue to build upon the growth the College has already realized and work to develop new courses that will help us provide the workforce of the future.”

Mr. Smith began working at SCC as an adjunct automotive instructor in 2003 and became a full-time instructor in 2005. He served as an instructor in our Ford ASSET Program prior to becoming Program Director of Automotive and Department Chair of Industrial Technologies in 2022.

As Department Chair, Mr. Smith focused on developing curriculum for automotive and diesel technology as well as working with faculty to revitalize the College’s Machine Tool Program — which now for the first time in many years offers both day and evening courses on the Giles and Cherokee County Campuses.
