Unleashing the Power of Self-Care in the New Year

In today's fast-paced world, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the demands of daily life. Juggling work deadlines, personal responsibilities, and taking care of our families can take a toll on our mental well-being. However, amidst the chaos, there lies a powerful tool that we often overlook - self-care.

Self-care is NOT a luxury nor is it selfish. It is a necessity. Taking time to care for our mental and emotional well-being is crucial for maintaining a healthy balance and preventing burnout. By prioritizing self-care, we build resilience, improve our focus, and boost our overall happiness. Most importantly, as caregivers, influencers, teachers, coaches…. anyone in a position to care for teens and their mental health, we cannot pour from an empty bucket. By modeling positive coping skills, we are directly impacting how teens learn to take care of their own mental health. Here are a few strategies to consider.

·       Establish boundaries – learn how to say no and feel good about it.

·       Prioritize sleep – sleep, or lack thereof, directly affects mental health. Aim for 7-9 hours.

·       Engage in physical activity – this resolution does not need to focus on weight, but rather consistent physical activity is a powerful stress reliever.

·       Practice relaxation techniques – incorporate deep breathing exercises or mindful techniques into your daily routine.

·       Prioritize family time – sometimes the hectic schedule leaves little room, but it is essential that families have non-distracted quality time together. Have a meal, a movie night, game time, etc. to encourage conversation.

My wish for each of you is that you resolve to take good care of yourself. As a parent, I know that I have room to grow in this area as we tend to put the needs of others above self. Give yourself permission to put yourself first. Fill your tank and you will find not only greater joy, but you will have so much more to offer those you love the most.

Mental Health Education

We are so excited to launch our brand new podcast, Brainwaves Unplugged: Real Talk on Mental Health hosted by Grace Gallagher!

This podcast unites personal narratives, expert insights, and meaningful life experiences to address mental health issues. Its mission is to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health by providing a platform for open and honest dialogue. Each episode delves into authentic experiences, showcasing voices from diverse backgrounds, including mental health professionals, advocates, and individuals sharing their personal journeys. The program aims to create a supportive environment where listeners can learn, connect, and feel empowered to confront mental health challenges.

For the first episode, our guest, Jentae Scott-Mayo, explores the journey of facing the fear of seeking help and the process of going to therapy. With a focus on reducing the stigma, Jentae and Grace's conversation empowers individuals by normalizing therapy and highlighting how educating ourselves can transform fear into strength and self-growth.

The first episode will be posted on Monday, Jan. 6th!

2024 Program Impact Report

We are incredibly proud of the impact we've had on teens and families this year. Thinking of all the teens who are equipped with new tools and resources to face life's challenges in a positive way is what keeps us going each day.

We truly could not do this without the support of our community, and we are very grateful that you choose to partner with us. If you would like to make a year-end gift, please do so here.

Year End Giving

Thank you to our donors who helped us reach our goal of $6,000 on Giving Tuesday. We're now able to launch our new journal Self-Esteem and Body Image in 2025! Many of you gave an EOY gift and we thank you.

If you are still considering making a gift please know it will help us do the following in 2025: offer improved toolkits for teens, host a new teen only event, provide materials for SpeakUp clubs, and launch our new podcast. Thank you in advance for your support of CKG and our mission.
