Speakeasy Above Nola Opens Tonight
The Speakeasy Above Nola opens this evening with guitarist Brad Yoder performing two sets.
An intimate space above the restaurant Nola on the Square, the venue will have local Pittsburgh performers every Tuesday evening starting at 7:00 p.m. Speakeasy Above Nola seats 30 guests and serves small plates and cocktails. If you enjoy soft, acoustic music this new addition to the ever-growing downtown music scene is the place to enjoy local musicians unplugged.

Downtown Residences Invited to a Night at the Theater

The Downtown Community Development Corporation (DCDC) in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Playhouse welcomes the Downtown community for a night out at the theater.
On Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m., the residents of Downtown are invited to see Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Pittsburgh Playhouse.
Bal Srinivasan, board member and resident ambassador for the DCDC, has been an advocate for opening up the Downtown area to its residents.
"One mission of the DCDC is to build a Downtown residential community and when I moved downtown 7 years ago, part of why I moved is to be close to and have access to opportunities," Srinivasan said.
Srinivasan has worked with the Pittsburgh Playhouse as well as the Pittsburgh Public Theater to have nights where the residents of the Downtown area can go enjoy a show for a discounted price.
"The Playhouse and I worked it out to do another resident night and my hope is to continue to do discounted events," Srinivasan said. "Residents enjoyed it and it was good for the Playhouse to sell more seats."
Srinivasan said that they hope they can continue to offer these nights to the community as a way to bring everyone together.
"I hope to continue to work with downtown theaters and to start building a community of like-minded residents and get them together," Srinivasan said.

Much Ado About Nothing is More Than Nothing

The Pittsburgh Playhouse will be presenting Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing Nov. 8, through Nov. 17.
Point Park University graduate, Steven Wilson, has adapted and will be directing one of Shakespeare's light-hearted comedies at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Wilson is right at home in Playhouse because he has grown up within the theater.
Much Ado About Nothing combines all of Shakespeare's acclaimed themes; love, betrayal, and deception. The show focuses on several love triangles that must overcome these hardships.
"Audiences are sure to experience laughs and a few jaw-drops as they journey through Shakespeare's timeless plot twists," according to the Pittsburgh Playhouse website.
The Conservatory Theatre Company is putting on Much Ado About Nothing and is able to portray Shakespeare the way it was meant to be on stage.
Tickets for the show are now on sale through the
Pittsburgh Playhouse website. The shows run from Thursday to Sunday on two consecutive weekends.
"After many ups and downs for the show's witty and somewhat malicious characters," the Pittsburgh Playhouse website said, "love wins out in the end."

Even Hotel Opens in Kaufmann Building
The 160-room
Even
Hotel is open in the former Kaufmann's/Macy's department store Downtown. The
hotel occupies the former department store's fifth and sixth floors. The
hotel entrance is at the corner of Forbes Avenue and Cherry Way.
Guest rooms will circle an open atrium in the center of the building and Cork and Kale restaurant will be open for breakfast and dinner.
Michael Samschick, Core Realty president and CEO, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette he is "beyond excited" about the opening of the
hotel.
"Great things take time and the concept and the finishes are all really outstanding. It just goes to show you that perseverance will prevail," he said. "It's really an exciting step for the Kaufmann's building."
The overall development - known as Kaufmann's Grand - features 311 luxury apartments and 130,000 square feet of retail space. Mr. Samschick said about 140 apartment leases have been signed and some residents have already moved in.

The Pittsburgh Opera Presents Don Giovanni

The Pittsburgh Opera stirred laughter and movement from the audience during the performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni.
The Benedum Center kicked off its 81st season with Don Giovanni. The performance was witty and all in good humor; in today's world may be seen as cringe-worthy.
Don Giovanni (Craig Verm) is portrayed as a womanizer and essentially a sexual predator that thrives off of his conquest of women. It is only after he sexually assaults Donna Anna (Rachelle Durkin) and kills her father does his "love" life begins to complicate itself.
From the use of balconies to the elaborate dance scenes, the eye of the audience is constantly moving around the stage to catch the latest action of Giovanni and his enraged ex-lover, Elvira (Corrie Stallings).
Antony Walker conducted the incredible musicians that played the iconic Mozart score. Kristine McIntryre directed the handful of opera singers who played their parts effortlessly.
Although Don Giovanni is no longer playing at the Benedum, the Pittsburgh Opera is gearing up for their next opera, Florencia en el Amazonas (1996) by Daniel Catán.
Florencia Grimaldi, a famous opera singer, is traveling around Brazil hoping to find her past lover, Cristóbal. Cristóbal is a butterfly hunter who went into the Amazon jungle and disappeared. Florencia must go into the Amazon to find her love and encounters an interesting group of characters along the way.
Antony Walker will conduct this opera as well with Stephanie Havey directing in the style of a revival of Jose Maria Condemi's original production. The opera will run from November 9 to November 17.
