What is an Empowered Patient and How to Be Your Own Medical Advocate?

Guest speaker: Susan O. Cassidy, M.D., J.D.

Wednesday, July 22
1:00-2:00 PM

The health care system is ever-changing and becoming more complex.

Issues to be discussed:
• Why generic documents, like living wills, are too general to be helpful and are open to interpretation.
• Why creating a personalized road map for your wishes to guide "in the moment" medical and chronic care decision making so important?
• How to decide if surgery or a medical treatment is right for you
• How to make sure you get the care you need, but also need the care you are getting

This should be a lively discussion with plenty of time for questions!
Being a Child of Survivors: From Trauma to PhD to Resilience to The Book

With Author Bruria Lindenberg Cooperman

Wednesday, July 29
11 AM, EST.

For This I Survived? Children of Survivors Beyond The Trauma, is about children of Holocaust Survivors but it's also more. Now talking as adults, they emphasize the trauma but also the resilience their parents experienced. They're older now and there is a renewed understanding of what they went through growing up. Some even use humour -- dark as it may be. So Jewish!
Bruria Lindenberg Cooperman was born in British Mandated Palestine. Her parents had been smuggled in with Aliya Bet. Her father served in the IDF in the '48 war for independence. The family moved to Canada in 1954. Their journeys and experiences are part of the book For This I Survived.

Q & A to follow her presentation.

Education in the Face of a Pandemic

Guest speaker: Richard Conrath

Thursday, August 6
1:30-3:00 PM

Education in the U.S. is facing a grim challenge as the coming school year approaches. Over 56 million students will be returning to the K-12 school system and taking classes in some form or another. The challenge, of course, is making that happen in a safe and educationally sound way. The same issues confront Higher Education as close to 20 million students will be planning to enroll for the first time or to return to college campuses.
1.  What will the educational system in this country look like in the face of the current Pandemic?
2.  What will education look like after the virus has spent itself?
3.  Will we be left with a virtual educational system led by corporations and elite universities? Or will the traditional systems now in place remain?
