Fall 2023

WF_masthead.png

Dear friends,

I have been at the helm of the Women’s Fund SouthCoast for over six months now and I cannot be more enthusiastic about our future. Last month we returned home from the international Feminist Funded conference in Washington, D.C. with renewed energy about our global action to move the needle on gender and racial justice. Not even a month later, my heart shattered for our global community when the news broke out about the mass violence in Israel and Gaza. When war is waged, it is often women, girls and gender expansive people that are most impacted due to pre-existing inequalities. We condemn violence against women at home, abroad and everywhere it exists. We also stand with those on the SouthCoast and elsewhere who may have lost loved ones or have otherwise been affected.

There is so much work we can do at home to address global crises. Migrant families, including pregnant people and children, are housed in hotels across the SouthCoast and in need of support. Young women and other menstruators still lack access to period products in schools. Our region is an abortion desert and in some cases, a maternity care desert too. Despite the challenges we face, we can and should celebrate our progress.

We are proud of our Board Present, Carmen Amaral and Special Projects Intern, Keyanna Jones for being recognized as YWCA of Southeastern MA Women of Distinction. They join at least five other Women’s Fund Board members and volunteers who received the prestigious award. We also convened over 40 women and allies for our Progress in Play networking event and have been shedding light on gender justice issues on television, in print and on social media.

After decades of work advocating for pay equity, the state is about to sign into law the Francis Perkins Workplace Equity Act which will require organizations of more than 25 employees to list salary ranges and more. The State Senate also just passed the landmark I AM bill providing free menstrual products in public schools, prisons and shelters. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who have been involved. I look forward to the day we can celebrate these bills becoming law.

The Women’s Fund Participated in Feminist Funded 2023

For the first time ever, more than 150 gender justice funders and advocates rallied on Capitol Hill last week for Feminist Philanthropy Hill Day, an advocacy event organized by The Women’s Funding Network in partnership with the National Women’s Law Center and the Global Fund for Women.

The Women’s Fund SouthCoast got to share issues facing women, girls and gender expansive people in the region and community-driven solutions to address them. Issues including the abortion desert on the SouthCoast, the childcare cliff that is emerging, support for the influx of migrant families and the need to increase funds to advance gender justice. Only 1.9% of all charitable giving goes to women and girls.

The Hill Day consisted of a how-to training on policy advocacy, led by National Women’s Law

Center. Next was a Senate briefing on policy solutions for the top women’s issues, including pay equity, child care, maternal and child health, reproductive rights, and other critical issues.

“This conference was an amazing opportunity to connect with other Women’s Fund’s CEOs, heads of foundations, our Congressional leaders and those who share our commitment to gender justice. I made many new connections that will help increase our fundraising and advocacy efforts.”

-Christine Monska

“It was so empowering to be amongst so many incredible feminist leaders. The sessions were a vibrant blend of thought-provoking insights and eye-opening information. I'll treasure this experience as a constant source of inspiration as we continue our work on the SouthCoast.”

Progress in Play

On September 28, our "Progress in Play" event was held at Play Arcade. It was a fantastic night filled with both new and familiar faces. We aimed to build community connections and foster networking. We are grateful to everyone who attended. Thank you for making it a memorable and successful evening!

Keyanna Jones Joined our Team as a Special Projects Intern

Keyanna shares her experience working for the Women's Fund below:

In August, I started my position as the Special Projects Intern at the Women’s Fund, which has provided me with extensive insight into the processes of grantmaking and advocacy. Witnessing a community-oriented organization successfully equip young girls and women with equitable opportunities to achieve financial security has been incredible.

During my time with the Fund, I have worked on web design for the grantmaking page, youth empowerment initiatives, and building a community resource table. Gaining first hand experience in public service has allowed me to learn through action and exploration.

Recently, I was awarded the YWCA Girls Leading Change Award for my demonstrated commitment to growing my community through community service and leadership.

As a senior at New Bedford High School, I am getting ready to apply to college, and my passion for expanding community networking and social development has led me to pursue a career in political science and public policy.
