SUFU North August Highlights

From Stacy Giberson

Kevin Rolls into New Adventures

We are thrilled to share that SUFU member Kevin has received his brand-new wheelchair! This upgrade will give him greater comfort, independence, and mobility for everyday activities and SUFU events. His smile says it all this is more than just new wheels, it’s a new chapter.

Northern Penobscot Chapter Explores Jerry Pond

Members of SUFU’s Northern Penobscot Chapter gathered at Jerry Pond in Millinocket for an accessibility walk-and-talk. The group explored trails, discussed ways to improve access to fishing and recreation areas, and noted key changes that could make the space even more welcoming for people with mobility devices. Ideas included clearer trail signage, more accessible fishing areas, and additional restrooms. The event sparked great conversation on how the community can work together to make nature more inclusive. This project will continue to evolve as members meet with Millinocket town officials and community members.

Bringing Stories to Life Outdoors

Meanwhile, in Presque Isle, the Central Aroostook Chapter is partnering with the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library to construct a StoryBook Walk/Stroll at Mantle Lake Park, with installation planned for next month. The project will allow visitors to enjoy a children’s story page-by-page while walking the park trail. The trail has already been tested for accessibility by a SUFU member in a motorized wheelchair, who reported easy access.

During a recent meeting at Mantle Lake, members learned about the steps involved in constructing a StoryBook Walk. Librarian Elyse will be providing a breakdown of tasks and a volunteer list at the next chapter meeting so members can get involved. After reviewing several book options, the group chose the joyful and inclusive children’s title The World Needs More Purple People as the very first featured story.

🙏 A special thank-you to the Presque Isle Maintenance Department for ensuring the trail is well-maintained and accessible.

From new mobility tools to accessible outdoor adventures and creative literacy projects, SUFU members are making an impact across Maine together, and we are building more inclusive communities.
