Legislative Advocacy

SUFU members have continued their work on Legislative Advocacy. Recently members spent time contacting their legislators about the importance of funding LD 1666 in Maine. This bill would increase Maine’s contribution of SSI and allow Mainers with disabilities to get married without losing a portion of their Social Security Income (SSI) benefits, is to be funded in the Supplemental Budget. SSI provides a basic level income for people who live with disabilities to help meet their needs for food, clothing, and shelter. Currently, if two people who both receive SSI benefits want to get married, there is a reduction in their benefits. This is referred to as the “Marriage Penalty” by self-advocates.
If you would like to learn more about this SUFU issued a press release that you can find here.
Jon's Corner

Normally I talk about something I have been doing in my corner of the newsletter. This month I want to tell you about something I'm looking forward to doing in April and that is attending the Disability Policy Seminar in person.

I have attended it once before virtually but have always wanted to go in person.
I will be traveling to Washington DC with others from SUFU to attend the Disability Policy Seminar. You can see the full schedule on their website at

We are going to be making a presentation to our Senators and Representatives about Social Security Reform, specifically Asset Limit Increases and Marriage Penalty Elimination on the last day. Those are called hill visits.
The group that is going has been preparing for this hill visit and we are practicing our presentation.
In addition, the other ways we have been preparing are by talking about all the new people we will meet at the seminar. We have reviewed what we should wear and how to pack the right size suitcase for our travels. For those that are flying what to expect when going through security and what the rules are for flying. We have all been planning if we want to bring spending money for our own personal use. We reviewed what it will be like traveling on the Metro. In addition, our group has committed to walking 15 minutes every day to prepare for the walking we will be doing in Washington DC. We may have the opportunity to do some sightseeing while we are there, so we have talked about that and what to expect.

I look forward to giving you a full report on my time at the Disability Policy Seminar when we return. I will try to take some photos to share in the next newsletter.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. At our most recent statewide we spent time watching videos from other self-advocacy groups and then discussing them. One video we watched was titled I dream of a world and after watching it members shared what kind of world they want to live in. We were able to capture some of their answers to share below:

  • A world that I helped shape. To be given the chance to have input.
  • Where there are no barriers. Where people with disabilities can go where they want to go and there won't be obstacles in the way.
  • Where no one tells me what to do.
  • Where we get along.
  • To be respectful and not be judgemental of others.
  • A world where we can all live peacefully and have equal rights.
  • A world where everyone respects each other.
  • A world where I'm not put into a box based upon my disability.
  • A world where every voice matters.
  • A world where I'm treated like family.
