Activating the Tongue

At Plasticity Brain Centers, we don’t ask patients to simply practice tasks they’re already struggling to do and hope capacity improves over time.

Instead, we work in a language the brain understands.

That means directly activating the neurological circuits responsible for function, rather than repeatedly drilling the function itself.

This newsletter begins a series exploring how we do that—and why it matters.

Why Repeating Difficult Tasks Isn’t Always the Answer

When someone is dizzy, fatigued, struggling with speech, swallowing, balance, or cognition, asking them to repeatedly “practice” those tasks can be frustrating—and often ineffective.

Why? Because the neurological pathways controlling those abilities may not be properly activating.

If the circuit isn’t firing correctly, effort alone won’t fix it.

So instead of pushing harder on broken systems, we focus on repairing and activating the circuits underneath.

Direct Circuit Activation: The Brain’s Native Language

The nervous system responds best to precise, targeted input. When the right nerve pathways are stimulated, the brainstem and higher brain centers receive clear signals—and can begin reorganizing, adapting, and improving function. This is the foundation of neuroplasticity.

Why the Tongue?

The tongue is one of the most neurologically rich structures in the body. It connects directly to the brainstem through multiple cranial nerves, including:

  • Hypoglossal Nerve (CN XII): Controls tongue movement for speech, swallowing, and eating
  • Facial Nerve (CN VII): Provides taste sensation
  • Glossopharyngeal & Vagus Nerves (CN IX & X): Support swallowing, sensory input, and autonomic regulation (fight or flight response).

Because of these connections, activating the tongue sends powerful signals directly into the brainstem, a central hub for balance, coordination, breathing, and autonomic function. Patients have called this tool our “instant calm machine”.

Why Tongue Stimulation Helps

Rather than practicing speech or swallowing when those systems are limited, targeted tongue activation can:

  • Stimulate brainstem pathways
  • Improve coordination of motor and sensory systems
  • Support balance, gait, and autonomic regulation
  • Create conditions for higher-level function to improve

At Plasticity, we apply this concept intentionally and therapeutically as part of a broader, individualized program.

What This Means for Patients

We aren’t asking the brain to “try harder.” We’re giving it clear input, at the right place, in the right way.

That’s how meaningful change begins.

This is just the first example of how Plasticity works with the nervous system—rather than against its limitations.

Activate the circuit → support plasticity → restore function.
