Members and friends,

It is my pleasure to announce the recipient's of this year's Business and Person of the Year Awards!

Each year, Aurora Chamber of Commerce accepts nominations from the community for Business & Person of the Year. An Awards Committee made up of volunteer member representatives then determines the honorees.

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR 2017: Mill Distributors, Inc.

Business of the Year is given to a local business or organization that makes a positive contribution to the Aurora business community while showing a commitment to making Aurora a better place to work and live.

This year's recipient, Mill Distributors, Inc. is a 4th-generation family company that has served the commercial interior needs of the hospitality industry, as well as healthcare, education, commercial and government facilities, since 1926. The business is currently run by Doug and Tom Wieder, and was started by their grandmother Beatrice Marx in Cleveland, Ohio. They design, manufacture, and install many of their own products, including a line of terry towels, decorative bedding, and window coverings.

Mill has called Aurora its home since building its 40,000 square foot facility here in 1996. Doug Wieder, currently a member on both the Aurora Chamber of Commerce and Portage Development Board, believes strongly in giving back to community. Doug is always willing to help support and promote the Aurora business community, giving both of his time and talent and providing donations to worthy causes.  Mill also supports workforce training efforts by offering internships to local high school and university students. Aurora Chamber of Commerce is exceptionally proud to honor Mill Distributors, Inc. as Business of the Year.

Person of the Year is given to recognize the contribution of a person who exemplifies civic awareness, demonstrates leadership, and works for the betterment of the Aurora community. Kathi Grandillo is the embodiment of these qualities.

Kathi works tirelessly and with amazing positivity on any project in which she is involved. Club Walden. Walden Homeowner's Association. American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Rotary Club of Aurora. City of Aurora Planning Commission. Aurora City Council. This is a short sample from a long list of Kathi's involvements. Currently a City Council representative for the Ward in which she lives, Kathi works diligently to understand and represent the interests of her constituents and the community at large while forging relationships with other members of Council and the Administration in order to best determine the needs of the City. She also serves as Chair of the City of Aurora's Planning Commission, and as such is known for her ability to intelligently and reasonably consider the important issues that come before the commission. Kathi treats everyone with respect, and is granted that same respect in return.

Most importantly, and a s stated by fellow Rotarian Laura Radcliff of Edward Jones Investments in her nomination of Kathi: "Above all else, Kathi is a mom who loves and supports her two sons at every opportunity". That unshakeable, loving support is extended to Kathi's entire family, and truly is at the heart of all she does. Aurora Chamber of Commerce is immeasurably proud to honor Kathi Grandillo as Person of the Year.

The Gertsburg Law Firm

The attorneys of Gertsburg Law have a comprehensive understanding of the countless legal issues facing businesses on a daily basis. In order to share our knowledge with the community, we publish weekly blog articles that explain and elaborate on issues relevant to business owners. Here are some of the articles available on our blog this month:

What to Do When an Employee Gives Notice
As an employer, one of the most challenging things to deal with is when an employee quits. It is an unpleasant fact that when you have employees, some of them - sometimes even the best of them - will give notice for any number of reasons. Having a process in place to address the issue will make the transition as smooth as possible.

Ready to Start Your Business? Then You'll Need to Know about Non-Compete and Non-Disclosure Agreements
Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and non-compete agreements, also called a non-competition agreement or covenant not to compete, have distinct purposes, but both documents are restrictive covenants that limit what an employee can say or do, and (often) where they can and cannot work. These documents are designed to protect proprietary information and the company itself if an employee were to leave the company in order to work for a competitor.

The High Cost of Dementia
The Alzheimer's Association recently reported that one in nine Americans age 65 or older currently has Alzheimer's Disease. With the "baby boomer" generation aging and people living longer, that number may nearly triple by 2050. Alzheimer's, of course, is just one cause of dementia, so the number of those with dementia is likely much higher.  Caring for someone with dementia is more expensive, and care is often needed longer, than for someone who does not have dementia. Because the cost of a memory-care facility is out of reach for many families, caregivers are often family members who risk their own financial security and health to care for a loved one.
