Let's go...
Hello, it’s February 4. On this day in history, George Washington was elected the first U.S. president by a unanimous vote (1789); the Yalta Conference opened with Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin meeting to plan the final defeat and occupation of Nazi Germany (1945); and Facebook was launched by Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerberg (2004).
GUEST COMMENTARY—SPECIAL EDITION

Conformity v. Transformation
By Eileen Marx

Over the last couple of decades, I have personally witnessed a lot of conformity going on in Christian circles, despite Biblical wisdom to the contrary.

As believers and followers of Christ, the book of Romans tells us exactly what we should be doing.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” — Romans 12:2

I remember feeling the intensity of this worldly conformity when Barack Obama was President. I became keenly aware of this trend while watching the news highlight the celebration of gay couples and the new law that made it legal for people of the same sex to marry. This important verse from Isaiah came to mind:

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.” Isaiah 5:20

This Scripture was being fulfilled in a big way right before my eyes. It was difficult for me to watch as I knew in my heart that the union between same-sex couples went against God’s design for mankind.

Blinding people to the Truth is one of the many successful strategies the powers of darkness use to further drive people away from God.

Sadly, some in the Church, in an attempt to be politically correct, welcomed an ungodly mindset with open arms.

This liberal interpretation serves to contribute to the rapid decline of morality across our Nation. Because the Church has become so accommodating of these alternative lifestyles, the proverbial door has opened to so much more darkness.

Those behind the same-sex agenda have made their message clear

Accept it.

Tolerate it.

It honestly doesn’t matter whether Americans agree with this lifestyle. The more Christian leaders are willing to dismiss or set aside God’s Word on the subject, the stronger the current becomes.

The common narratives include:

It doesn’t affect me.

God loves everyone.

Who am I to judge?

The more Christians buy into these beliefs, the greater the momentum will sweep through our culture. But what is “tolerance,” and why does it only apply to some people, not all?

In today’s climate, if you simply have another view or perspective you are called a hater, a bigot, homophobic or a racist. That doesn’t sound very “tolerant.”

This trend has opened the door to many different movements that run contrary to God and His Word. Same-sex marriage is just a piece of our fallen society.

Adultery, fornication, abortion, sexual abuse, pedophilia, sex trafficking of children, transgender and non-binary gender identities, and others are now part of the American landscape.

The difference between good and evil, right and wrong, and light and darkness has never changed, but it has become increasingly more twisted as we now witness evil being called good and good being called evil.

Evil has always been a part of the world. Humans have participated in evil acts since the beginning of time. This tendency is explained in Scripture:

“…Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.” — John 3:19-20
As believers, we are to be different, set apart, a light in the world we live in. We are to represent the light, not the darkness.

Paul tells us this in Romans:

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.” — Romans 12:2

Refusing to stand up for what is right is giving in to what is wrong

I know of some church leaders who avoid calling sin a sin for fear of offending nonbelievers. They use the pulpit as a popularity platform instead of taking the opportunity to speak truth and show people the way to a true and righteous life. They’ve bought into the tolerance movement. This is the saddest and most unloving thing a pastor could ever do.

As a nonbeliever, I actually came to faith because a pastor spoke God’s Word without watering it down. He wasn’t afraid to offend anyone or try to be politically correct. I remember the experience well.

One Wednesday night during Bible study, the pastor read a passage of Scripture revealing those who would not inherit the Kingdom of God.

“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” — Galatians 5:19-21

I was an individual in that list and I thought to myself, “ How arrogant of this pastor to tell me I was not going to go to heaven because I was living a life that God described as ungodly.”

Yet he was simply teaching God’s word and allowing it to do the work God intended.

By the way, I was deeply offended and convicted, and I didn’t like it one bit.

Ironically, I kept coming back to hear more Bible teachings week after week until I realized how much God loved me and that I was without Him in my life.

I am so grateful that this pastor didn’t give in to his feelings or fear of man but simply proclaimed God’s truth to the congregation — something God had called him to do. That was in the late ’80s; a lot has changed since then.

The challenges today are not necessarily because it’s hard to avoid conforming to this world. That will always be challenging as Romans 12:2 tells us.

The challenge is to keep our minds filled with God’s Word, thereby living it out in obedience, allowing ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit, not our flesh.

“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” — Ephesians 5:18

“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” — Colossians 3:16

Unfortunately, we’re seeing so many so-called believers conforming to the cultural mindset, not just being tolerant but actually following these worldly ideas. They are “playing church.”

By taking God’s Word very casually, they are allowing their hearts and minds to be swayed by the principles and powers of this world, and neglecting the mandate to be transformed and changed by the power of God and His Spirit.

They are not set apart, and they do not behave any differently than a nonbeliever.

A very common thing today is to see unmarried Christian couples living together, partying and compromising. Why are they choosing to do this and even justifying it? Do they not feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit?

How about Christians who celebrate other Christians living a gay lifestyle by saying, “God doesn’t condemn this, but rather, He condones it. After all, God loves them too.”

Like their gay Christian friends, they are choosing to ignore the Holy Spirit, as He would not condone this behavior. Both of these lifestyles are not approved by God; they are not good, acceptable or the perfect will of God. No matter how many people want to believe “it’s good” or “it’s right,” it simply will never be!

Every person on this planet will stand before God Almighty and give an account of how they lived on this earth. Believers in heaven will be judged by their works.

“If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved — even though only as one escaping through the flames.” — 1 Corinthians 3:12

Unbelievers will stand before the judgment of God.

“Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.” — Revelations 20:11

What sobers my mind is the judgment of nonbelievers; those who reject Christ have only one destination — the lake of fire.

“But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars — they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” — Revelation 21:8

If Christians really believed this, they would choose to live out God’s Word. Instead, they fail to obey it or to sincerely look at the world and see how much darkness there is around them.

They waste an opportunity to be a light because they would rather live for themselves and their pleasure instead of living for God.

Taking God’s Word seriously and obeying it will result in a life change that reflects God’s will — a will that is good and acceptable to God. This is where I believe the transformation that results in genuine change takes place.

When a person receives Jesus as their Savior and becomes what Jesus describes as “Born Again,” the Holy Spirit comes into that person and lives within them. Their mind starts being transformed, turning God’s thoughts into their thoughts and forcing carnality to take a back seat.

This is a supernatural event
I remember this happening to me without even trying. My sister and I were living together, and after I was born again, my life started changing.

We used to joke about different things and people, but suddenly those jokes weren’t funny to me anymore. She looked at me and wondered what in the world was happening. I couldn’t explain it.

There was something happening inside of me that was changing the way I looked at things. I felt a conviction (an understanding of sin) over things I never felt were wrong before. This was indeed the Holy Spirit living in me and transforming me. The more I surrendered to the will of God and His spirit, the more I grew. This was the proof that I was indeed being transformed by the renewing of my mind. I could see what was good and acceptable to God, whereas before this transformation, it was a mystery.

“…I was blind, but now I see.” — John 9:25

The incredible thing is this happens so naturally, yet in a supernatural way. It cannot be manufactured. We can’t try to make this happen, although we can try to be good and abstain from certain behaviors.

But subject to the limitations of our own willpower, it isn’t a matter of “if” we will give in, but “when.” When a person truly surrenders their life to God and Jesus, the Holy Spirit goes to work on behalf of that person.

Saying we are believers but living a life that is contrary to God’s will for us will do more damage to a world that is desperate for something that is true.

As a nonbeliever I was blinded and unable to see the Truth. I was being led astray, away from God, away from His goodness, and I had no idea. As a believer I have been saved to not only bring God glory in the things I say and do, but I am also a witness to a world that is under the sway of the wicked one.

"We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one." — 1 John 5:19

I had experienced the love of God through Yeshua so profoundly in the deepest part of my heart and soul that I wanted to please Him, be close to Him. I had never experienced this love before. It was because of this that I wanted to follow Yeshua. I had enough of this world at the age of 23.

Looking back at all the successes I had enjoyed, I was still left wanting something more, something else. I had no peace but didn’t know that. I was a driven young woman with lots of ambition but no true direction, no working compass. God gave me peace, purpose and direction in my young life.

Observing the world today, I see so many people who are lost. Their compasses are broken and they are taking direction from other lost people

So when I read in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world,” I get it.

This world is spinning out of control, and its conductor is the wicked one. To be able to see and understand the instability and chaos all around us, the safest place to be is close to God, listening to His voice and His instructions.

We do that by reading His Word, allowing the Holy Spirit to live in and through us and following His plan, not our own, for our lives.

Because of His amazing love,

Eileen
