Nicholas Giannatasio, 91, of Westerleigh, NY, formerly of Port Richmond, died on December 3, 2016, at home, surrounded by his family.
Nicholas was born in Port Richmond. He served as a Marine during World War II. He proudly entered the service at age 17. When he returned from the service, he met his future wife of 69 years, the former Marie Formica.
Nicholas was employed by the FDNY, retiring as a captain in 1975. Prior to that, he served in the police department for six years. Some of his hobbies included boating, fishing, crabbing, golfing, and oil painting. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also a member of the VFW Post in Mariners Harbor.
He was the beloved husband of Marie M. (nee Formica) for 69 years; loving father of the Rev. Dr. Nicholas Giannatasio (Saint Peter's, Southport) and his wife, Dale, and Annmarie Baird and her husband, Russell; cherished grandfather of Nicholas Giannatasio and his wife, Natalia, Nicole Morando and her husband, Jaime, Kyle Giannatasio and his wife, Katherine, Russell Baird and his wife, Laura, and Annmarie Ratcliff and her husband, Charles; devoted great-grandfather of Nicky, Luke, Rusty and Clayton; dear brother of Danny Giannatasio and his wife, Marie, Joseph Giannatasio and his late wife, Rose, Philomena Giambrone and her late husband, Charles, Mary Ann Morris and her late husband, Celar, the late Yolanda, late Anna, late John, late Connie; fond sister-in-law of Katherine. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The
Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, December 7, at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church. Interment was in Silver Mount Cemetery. Friends visited on Tuesday, December 6. In lieu of flowers, donations to the FDNY Burn Unit would be appreciated. Matthew Funeral Home, Staten Island, NY, handled the arrangements.
