Introduction to our new Executive Director, Algeo Che Casul

We'd like to formally announce Alego "Che" Casul as the new Executive Director of the Sonoma RCD! He will be starting with us May 1, 2023.

Che is a 7th generation rancher in Bodega, CA born and raised on the same ranch his great great great great grandfather settled in 1851. Spending much of his free time in his youth with his grandmother, Che was taught the deep importance of caring for the land generationally as she would highlight ranch projects that previous generations had carried out that were beneficial and was not shy of pointing out and naming those bygone family members whose actions had a negative effect on their current landscape and livelihood. Through this long view lens Che believes that it is imperative to nurture and grow the natural resources of Sonoma County for the generations that come after.

In 2008, Che received his BA in History from Lewis and Clark College and promptly returned home to take over the family ranch after the passing of his father Algeo Casul Sr. In 2013 Che received his Master’s in Public Administration from Sonoma State University. For 15 years Che has worked in service to Sonoma County managing housing programs for at-risk youth, vocational programs for those experiencing behavioral health issues, and volunteers and does development programs for Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County. For the last five years Che has lead Circuit Rider Community Services whose paid vocational programs for Sonoma County youth put money in the pockets of young people that need it, teach them career skills, and through their fire fuel mitigation and ecological restoration work help protect our natural resources and our community.

In his free time Che sits on the Board of New Ways To Work, the Sonoma County Coast Municipal Advisory Council, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s CREED Committee, the Board of Safer West County, is a wildland firefighter volunteer with the Good Fire Alliance, and maintains his family’s livestock and vineyard infrastructure. Seen here with a handful of black trumpet mushrooms Che is an avid outdoorsman where he pursues his passions of spearfishing, hunting, sea kayak angling, and mushroom foraging at every opportunity.

We are excited for this new chapter ahead of the Sonoma RCD. Welcome to the team, Che!
