Special Edition - Comic Con 2019
This is a special edition of the Mesa County Libraries 970West Studio newsletter devoted to Comic Con. We'll publish a more general newsletter next week. In the meantime, visit our Event Calendar for a look at what's happening at your local library!

Join us at Mesa County Libraries Comic Con this Saturday, Oct. 12!
Mesa County Libraries Comic Con happens this Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Two Rivers Convention Center in downtown Grand Junction.
This annual celebration of fandom will feature cosplay contests for kids, teens, and adults, as well as an Expo Hall filled with unique local artists, authors, crafters, and more. Comic Con merchandise also will be available for purchase. Special guests include the 501st Legion , the Junktown Comic Book Project , and the Justice League of Hope.

There will be a wide variety of panel discussions throughout the day on topics as varied as cosplay, board game design, role-playing games, and art. Meetups will take place for fans of Star Wars, Harry Potter, Stranger Things, and more. A Kids Room for younger children will feature Superhero Yoga Story Time, as well as activities and art for kids.

Mesa County Libraries Comic Con is a family-friendly event, and admission is free to anyone with a Mesa County Libraries card, or a $5 donation at the door.

Comic Con celebrates the importance of stories and fandoms that connect people and enrich lives. More than 5,000 people from throughout western Colorado attend this event annually. Unleash your inner fan and join us! 

Dive deep into fandom with panels and presentations all day long!
Panels and presentations let you take a deep dive into specific topics related to comics, heroes, fandom, and more. This year's Comic Con features a variety of panels, with subjects ranging from manga to board games, quidditch to Dungeons & Dragons, cosplay to art.

In other words, there's something for every fan!

And if that isn't enough, there will be a series of Fan Meetups happening throughout the day on topics such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, My Hero Academia, Stranger Things, and Modern Musicals.

Cosplay contests highlight Comic Con
A highlight of Comic Con is cosplay -- both for those who don costumes and those who attend just to see what people are wearing.

Cosplay contests will be held for children, teens, and adults. The contests will take place on the Cosplay Stage at the west end of the Expo Hall. Contestants may wear costumes of any kind as long as they conform to the  Rules for Cosplayers .

  • 10 a.m. - Kids Cosplay Contest (Ages 11 and under)
  • 1 p.m. - Teen Cosplay Contest (Ages 12-18)
  • 4 p.m. - Adult Cosplay Contest (Ages 19 and up) & NEW Group Cosplay Contest (All-ages groups of 2-10 cosplayers with the same theme or fandom)
  • Cosplayers may only compete in one competition.

Registration  will take place in the northwest corner of the Expo Hall by the Cosplay Stage  30 minutes before each contest . The first 100 cosplayers to arrive for registration in each age group will be entered in their respective contests. The first 20 groups to arrive for registration at 3:30 p.m. for the Group Cosplay Contest will be entered. Preregistration is not available.

Want to be really in-the-know about this year's Mesa County Libraries Comic Con? Spend some time with the inaugural edition of Mesa County Libraries' new podcast , The Audissey.

The first of what we expect to be many fun and informative podcasts about all things library features an interview with the library's new director, Michelle Boisvenue-Fox, and a series of segments about Comic Con.

The Comic Con segments provide an overview of this year's event, along with information about the cosplay contests, panel discussions, fan meetups, and other activities.
