BUILDING EXCELLENCE   In DeKalb
Damon Scott, Human Services Director
In accordance with CEO Thurmond's directive to deliver County services and continue operations during COVID-19, Human Services has implemented an emergency response plan to address those concerns which directly impact youth, families and seniors.
DEKALB SENIORS
Congregate Meals for Seniors at Neighborhood Centers
Transportation for Seniors
During COVID-19, it is more important than ever that DeKalb County older adults have transportation access. Though some transportation has been temporarily suspended to align with recommendations to limit travel from home, DeKalb Aging Transportation has continued to provide essential transportation service for persons needing a ride to dialysis treatment or medical appointments. Although senior centers are closed now, meals are being distributed to senior center members.

Because there is a special relationship between seniors who use transportation and the transportation drivers, DeKalb has partnered with Owl Transportation, the DHS Coordinated Transportation provider, to assist with delivery of congregate meals. Owl drivers are delivering meals weekly to seniors who use transportation to get to the senior center. Transportation staff are also continuing to work with persons who participate in the Transportation Voucher program as well as those who can use MARTA bus or paratransit to gain access to critical services.

TECHNOLOGY BRIDGES THE GAP FOR CASE MANAGERS
DeKalb Case Managers have suspended in-home visits to seniors as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic. While in-person visits are on hold, service provision continues through the use of technology. “We are able to use the telephone and internet to confront senior food insecurity”, said Lance Jones, Case Management Coordinator. In addition, Case Managers are working to ensure that seniors in need have access to food.

Thanks to DeKalb County Planning & Sustainability , we are able to mointor DeKalb's "social vulnerability" -  the degree to which a community exhibits certain social conditions, including high poverty, low percentage of vehicle access, or crowded households, may affect that community’s ability to prevent human suffering and financial loss in the event of disaster.
