A Note from Andres

Dear Neighbors,

As winter weather moves into our region, we want to share timely, reliable information to help keep you and your family safe. Forecasts are calling for snow and icy conditions across Northern Virginia — and while some of us may be hoping for a classic “snow day,” we know these conditions can also impact travel and county services.

This special edition newsletter brings together resources from the National Weather Service, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and Fairfax County to help you prepare, stay informed, and know where to turn if you need assistance.

Please remember that forecasts are always subject to change, so continue to follow official updates.

We encourage you to plan ahead, limit travel once conditions worsen, and check in on neighbors who may need extra support.

As always, please reach out to my office at Mason@fairfaxcounty.gov or by phone at our main phone line 703-256-7717 if we can be of service.

In case of an emergency, call 911. For road conditions or plowing updates, please contact VDOT Customer Service.

If our office is closed due to weather, we will share updates on our social media channels and through the Fairfax County Operating Status page.

Sincerely,

Andres Jimenez

Mason District Supervisor

10 Things to Know Before and During the Storm

1. Travel Early, Stay Put

Snow is expected Saturday evening into Sunday. Finish errands early and avoid travel once conditions worsen to allow plows and emergency crews to work safely

3. Emergency Supply Kits

Build or refresh your emergency kit — including one for pets. Find more information on how to ready your home, kit, & vehicle here.

5. Stay Informed

7. County Services

County programs and services may be impacted as the workweek begins. Check the Operating Status webpage for updates.

8. Know Your Winter Weather Terms

When winter storms approach, pay attention to weather alerts.

10. Use Salt Responsibly

Avoid overuse. A 12-ounce mug of salt is enough for a 20-foot driveway or about 10 sidewalk squares.

2. Snow Plowing Updates

VDOT maintains most county roads. Track progress at www.vdotplows.org.

4. Hypothermia Prevention

If you see someone unsheltered and at risk, call the non-emergency police line: 703-691-2131 (TTY 711). Learn more about shelter locations and warning signs through Fairfax County’s Hypothermia Prevention Program.

6. Shoveling & Fire Hydrants

Review snow shoveling safety tips and help keep fire hydrants clear. Consider “adopting” a hydrant near your home.

9. Check on Neighbors

Please check in on elderly or homebound neighbors and offer help after the storm if you’re able.
