We were proud to celebrate National PACE Month in September and recognize the life-changing impact of the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in North Carolina. Since the first center opened at Elderhaus in Wilmington in 2008, PACE has grown to 12 centers statewide, now serving more than 2,100 older adults and their caregivers.
Empowering Older Adults to Age in Place
PACE is designed to help older adults live safely and independently in their communities while receiving comprehensive, coordinated care. The average participant in North Carolina is 77 years old and often manages multiple chronic conditions. In addition to physical health care, PACE provides essential mental and emotional health services, including treatment for depression, bipolar disorder, and dementia.
Thanks to the dedication of interdisciplinary care teams, an impressive 95% of participants are able to remain in their homes. These teams tailor care to each individual’s needs, improving both quality of life and long-term health outcomes.
Key Outcomes in NC
- 80% decrease in depression symptoms was observed among new enrollees after just 9 months in the program
- 24% fewer hospitalizations compared to traditional Medicaid nursing home care
- 12% cost savings for Medicaid compared to other long-term care options
- Caregiver stress dropped from 48% to 17% after their loved one enrolled in PACE
- 95% of caregivers recommend PACE, and the program maintains a low 7% disenrollment rate
These outcomes highlight the effectiveness of PACE in improving health, reducing costs, and supporting both older adults and their caregivers.
Supporting Caregivers, Strengthening Communities
PACE also plays a vital role in supporting family caregivers by offering:
- Education and training
- Emotional support
- Respite care
These services help caregivers feel more confident, connected, and supported—reminding them that they are not alone in their journey. Through trusted relationships between participants, caregivers, and care teams, PACE helps ensure that older adults live with dignity, purpose, and a strong sense of community.
