September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

This month, we recommit to preventing suicide and making sure every North Carolinian can get the help they need.

988: A Lifeline for Crisis Support

If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, depression, anxiety, loneliness, or substance use, call 988 for free, confidential help any time. A recent survey found that 1 in 3 North Carolinians say 988 saved their life or the life of someone they know. On September 8, we’ll recognize 988 Day during National Suicide Prevention Week.

Who’s Most at Risk?

Suicide affects people of all ages and backgrounds, but some groups face higher risks:

  • It was a top 5 cause of death for ages 10–65 in NC last year.
  • It is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 19–34.
  • Veterans die by suicide at 2.7x the rate of non-veterans.
  • LGBTQI+ youth also face especially high risk.
  • Black youth are visiting emergency departments more often for suicide concerns, but are less likely to use 988.

We have released the Black Youth Suicide Prevention Action Plan, which focuses on peer support, safe firearm and medication storage, better coordination, and raising awareness.

We’re also hosting the Stronger Together Conference on September 20 in Rocky Mount for Black youth and young adults (ages 18–24).

Looking Ahead

The draft NC Suicide Prevention Action Plan will be finalized this month. It lays out strategies like:

  • Reducing access to lethal means
  • Expanding crisis services
  • Raising awareness
  • Supporting at-risk groups
  • Strengthening prevention systems

By 2030, the goal is to lower suicide rates, increase equity, and build stronger support across North Carolina.
