Parkview High School
Hearing Impairment/Deaf Ed
What site(s) have you served?
I started at Bethany Missouri, then moved to Missouri School of the Deaf. My first SPS site was in 2001 at Truman Elementary in a CSS classroom. I then moved to Parkview High School shortly after, in 2002, to work in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing District program. I have been providing services to students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing for 32 years, and served SPS students the past 17 years.
Why did you want to become a special education teacher?
I started out in college as a music major and during that semester I met a friend who was studying to be a Speech Teacher. She told me about the Deaf Education program and the sign language classes being offered from her program. I switched my major to Communications Disorders, and then moved forward to obtain my Masters of Science in Deaf Education. I didn’t teach in a classroom setting until I started teaching at the Missouri School for the Deaf. Currently, I am working on my 16th year at Parkview High School continuing to work with students in the Deaf/Hard Hearing District Program. I have always loved working with children with special needs.
