Week Six- February 11, 2019
Special Education Paperwork Reduction Bills Meeting Wednesday, February 13 From a physics perspective,
momentum is a quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity. Over the past six months at the Capitol, special education issues definitely have a strong momentum.  
This week in the Senate E-12 Finance and Policy Committee, six bills will be heard. The bills represent the New Ulm proposal to reduce mandated paperwork - paperwork that currently exceeds Federal requirements.  
We encourage you to attend the meeting on Wednesday afternoon if you are available, or to watch on-line.

Teachers of Color -
Press Conference 
Rep. Kunesh-Podein and Sen. Torres-Ray introduced bills to help address the teacher shortage in Minnesota. Recently, the Minnesota Teacher Supply & Demand report underlined the state's severe & persistent shortage of teachers, especially teachers of color & American Indian teachers (TOCAIT).
H.F. 824 and S.F. 1012 hopes to attract TOCAIT by offering Grow Your Own programs, grants and scholarships and teacher mentorship programs.

The governor's budget must be developed and presented to the Legislature on Tuesday, February 19.

Deadlines for Bills Announced
(1) The first deadline, March 15, 2019, at 11:59 p.m., is for committees to act favorably on bills in the house of origin.
(2) The second deadline, March 29, 2019, at 11:59 p.m., is for committees to act favorably on bills, or companions of bills, that met the first deadline in the other house.
(3) The third deadline, April 12, 2019, at 11:59 p.m., is for committees to act favorably on major appropriation and finance bills.
