The Conservancy is saddened to report the passing of
SS
United States
relieving captain John S. Tucker,
whose service included the vessel's maiden voyage as well as the ship's final years. Tucker passed away peacefully on Friday, March 16, at age 91.
Conservancy Executive Director Susan Gibbs recalls:
"Captain Tucker embodied the strength, grace and excellence of the SS
United States,
the
ship he served so ably
. I have such fond memories of visiting Captain Tucker at his home in Waterford, Maine, and hearing his tales of the sea, and of the outsized personalities who traveled aboard the SS
United States
"
The Conservancy honored Captain Tucker at our
first crew reunion in 2004
. Although he was unable to make the trip from Maine, Tucker sent a message, part of which read:

"Here we are, 52 years after the world-record-breaking maiden voyage for the North Atlantic speed record, which still stands as far as I am concerned. Ferry boats don't count in my book. We are paying tribute to a great liner, her crew and her place in history."
This week, we pay tribute to Captain Tucker's place in history. The Conservancy offers our heartfelt condolences to all of John's family and friends, as we wish him fair winds and following seas on his final passage.
