Happy Minyan Newsletter - Kol Sasson
Shavuos 5774
June 2014

If you want some material for the Torah Slam on the first night of Shavuos - you will certainly find some great stuff contained in the articles here! Also, in honor of the holiday, here is an abbreviated version of Shavuos 101 from Chabad.org - Enjoy!

The holiday of Shavuos commemorates the giving of the Torah on Har Sinai over 3,300 years ago. Shavuos is observed like other Torah holidays, which is basically the same way Shabbos is observed, except that cooking for the holiday and carrying in public areas (without an eiruv) are both permitted on holidays, whereas that is forbidden on Shabbos.

The main mitzvos are candle-lighting, special prayer services which include Hallel during the day, and meals with Kiddush. If the Beis HaMikdash were standing - may it be speedily rebuilt! - we would also be able to bring bikkurim, our first fruits, as well as holiday offerings.

Along with the mitzvos we observe for the holiday of Shavuos, there are several customs we have for this holiday as well - here's a brief overview of the main ones:

People fill their homes and shuls with flowers and greenery to recall Har Sinai as it was on the original Shavuos day - which the Midrash says was beautifully flower-filled.

Many people eat milk products like cheesecakes and blintzes, for various reason. One practical point being that prior to receiving the Torah, we had not been instructed in the laws of kosher slaughtering of animals, nor the separation of milk and meat. To avoid making mistakes, it is said that our ancestors ate dairy at first until they learned how to properly observe the laws of kashrut.
And metaphorically, we are called HaShem's children at the time of giving of the Torah, and just as children need milk to grow and thrive so we need Torah to grow and thrive.

Tikkun Leil Shavuos - the Night-time "Fixing" of Shavuos - is done by many people by staying up all night studying Torah. This is because we want to show that we are indeed anxiously awaiting the morning wherein we receive the Torah, although on the original Shavuos at Har Sinai, we woke up a little late. (Hence the idea of "fixing" or repairing the past.)

On Shavuos day, before Torah reading (but after Hallel) there is a special prayer of praise that is read, Akdamus Millin. We then read the portion of the Torah that includes the narrative of the Revelation at Mount Sinai and the Ten Commandments, and then we read Megillas Rus - the Book of Ruth (outside of Israel, this is read on the 2nd Day of the holiday).

There are a few reasons why we read the story of Ruth on Shavuos, which includes the fact that hers is the first fully recorded conversion story in the Bible. Since we were all like converts at Har Sinai when we accepted the Torah, we relate to Ruth's love and acceptance of the Torah. Also, she is the great-grandmother of King David, whose yahrtzeit is on Shavuos. And of course, the story of Ruth took place during the harvest season, which is this time of year and part of what we are celebrating on Shavuos.

May we all merit this Shavuos to accept the Torah in our hearts as we did at Har Sinai with awe and love, with unity and joy!

Good Yomtov! Chag Sameyach!

Reb Shlomo Carlebach, ztz"l - Tikkun Leil Shavuos

Do you know what the highest level in life is? The highest level in life is when everything is connected to me and I am connected to everything. The Holy Ba'al Shem Tov says that when I walk on the street and I see two drunkards talking to each other and I overhear the conversation, that means it is meant for me, because if it wouldn't be meant for me, I wouldn't hear it.

Imagine somebody were to tell you 'Did you see the newspapers in Alaska? Someone yelled at his brother'. I say 'Listen, this is crazy. This is not my concern.' That is very sweet but obviously you are not connected.
Let me share this story with you.

The Holy Rizhiner had six sons, and one of his sons was the Heilige Reb Beren'yu, in the city Liyevu. The Rizhiner said 'All my sons are holy, but if one of them could be the Mashiach, it's Reb Beren'yu.' You can imagine his level. He really wanted to do something for the world and it just didn't go, so he stopped being Rebbe. He disappeared and he came back for one Shabbos. He moved up to the mountains and sadly enough, he passed away.

This story was told by a yidelleh who was by Reb Beren'yu for Shavuos. On Shavuos, we celebrate the day we stood at Mount Sinai, the highest moment in the history of the world, G-d speaks to man. So in Rizhin, all the Rizhiner Chasidim  daven in the synagogue; but next to the synagogue there was a little room and the Rebbe would daven there. So everybody knows that Shavuos night, the night of the holiday where we wait for the dawn when G-d speaks to us, everybody is up all night learning. What else could you do that night?

Reb Beren'yu gathered a lot of young kids who were really looking for something high and deep. This yidelleh that told this story said 'I heard a lot about Reb Beren'yu, I wanted to be there for Shavuos'. Hundreds maybe thousands of people were there. After you finished eating, you start learning. Suddenly the door opened and the Heilige Reb Beren'yu opens the door. It was so holy and so high. Everyone stood around him in half a circle. I was expecting him to tell us great secrets of the Torah. He starts talking about the world, anything that happens in the world. I was taken back. Such a holy night, and he is talking about everything mundane and unimportant. This goes on the whole night, and the whole time I am thinking 'For this I had to come Shavuos, to hear all these words?'

Now listen to this. The learning for Shavuos night is called Tikkun, the night of the fixing. So he says 'He was talking about all these mundane things all night long. Suddenly he looked up, it was already dawn and he said 'It's time for fixing', and he closed the door. Suddenly I realized that every word he uttered, he was telling me my life story. Suddenly I realized that every word he had spoken was meant for me. I couldn't bear it any longer. I ran out from the synagogue. I ran to the forest and just broke down. I fell to the ground and I was crying my heart out. The Rebbe came back at about 10 o'clock to daven. I heard that he sent out people to collect everyone, because everyone had run somewhere else to cry, to fix themselves.

I just want to bless you and bless me back, that everything in the world should remind us of fixing. Everything in the world should fix us and we should fix it back.

You see what it is? If someone is, G-d forbid, physically sick, my fixing medicine might be somewhere in Alaska or in China. When, G-d forbid, my soul is sick, whatever I need for fixing is right here; it's always right here with me. Wherever my soul is, wherever I am, that is where the fixing is.

I want to share something very deep with you.

Do you know what the fixing of the soul is? Imagine I have to go to New York, so if I'm in San Francisco I have to go east. If I want to go to Los Angeles I am going south. If I want to go to Hawaii, I am going west. Now imagine I am sitting on a train going east and I think I am going to Hawaii. So suddenly while I am sitting on the train, talking to people, telling them I am so glad I am going to Hawaii, people start to say 'You are crazy. You are going east - you better go west'. But you know what I have to do? First I have to go back to San Francisco where I began, I have to change the train, and then I am on my way to Hawaii. Imagine on a spiritual level if I go wrong. I go the different direction, do I have to first go back to where I began, and take a different train only from there? No. The moment I realize I am in the wrong direction, I am already there. I am already there; I don't even have to turn around. It's always right there, right there. But it takes so much strength.

You know what it is, friends? We feel much better when we feel we could be more guilty. We always feel better if we are able to feel like shleppers, like kvetchers. You walk around thinking, 'Oy vey, I'm so sick, I am so far gone. Everything is so terrible, what a world.' If someone were to tell you, it doesn't take anytime to fix it... We would like someone to tell us how sick we are instead. You have to go barefoot from here to India and from there to China. And then for ten years you have to sit on a mountain and do nothing, and then for twenty years you have to scratch out your hair. Then your soul will be fixed and it will feel so good. If someone tells you, you don't have to do anything, then we just don't know what to do with ourselves. The holiness of Shavuos is, when you hear G-d's word it is so good, everything is good.

You see, it's strange. For somebody to tell you it's (life is) bad, you don't need G-d to tell you it's bad. But to hear the message that it's good, it really has to come from Heaven, because somehow, we are not conditioned to hear good things. Shavuos is the great morning when we mamesh hear from G-d 'I am G-d who took you out from Egypt, I'm still around'.

We should have a good Yomtov, we should have good days and good nights, and a lot of strength to know it's so easy to fix ourselves. It takes so little to fix the world, it takes so little to give each other strength. Reb Nachman says 'I have seen a lot of young people who could have made it; all they needed is one person to tell them 'You can do it'. So you never know, maybe you can be this one person to so many people.

MEDITATIONS, KAVANNOT AND PRAYERS FOR LEARNING TORAH

Reb Sholom Brodt, from Sefer U'sfartem Lachem

Aleph(1). [Meditate. Kavannah-intention.] The study of Torah is veritable attachment to Hashem yisborach.

Hashem please allow me and help me be conscious that in learning Your Torah You are enabling me to be attached to You.

Beis(2). Inspire yourself to learn Torah in the way it was given - [it was given] with fear, awe, shiver and perspiration - [study] with conscious Yirat Shamayim, during the time of study.
Hashem may it be Your will that I may study Your Torah and intensely experience its life energy. May my mind and heart respond [to Your words] in fear and awe; May even my body sense this intensely and respond with shiver and perspiration.

Gimmel(3). Reveal your purpose before learning by stating - "I am learning Torah, to fulfill the Mitzvah of my Creator, who commanded me to study Torah, for the sake of unification of 'Kudsha brich Hu' and His Shechinah.

Daled(4). [Tshuvah before learning.] I regret my evil deeds and I accept upon myself to improve myself in the future.

Hey(5). [Kavannah-intention.] I am learning for the sake of learning, guarding, keeping, doing and fulfilling.

Vav(6). [Kavannah-intention.] I will [attempt to] devote myself to learning consciously without interruption, and I will try not to look outside of the sefer.

Zayin(7). [Kavannah-intention.] I am learning, to seek the truth of the Torah, to understand it well and to remember everything that I learn.

Chet(8). [Reminder.] The words of Torah learning are to be verbally expressed with our mouths and heard with our ears.

Tet(9). [Kavannah-intention.] I desire to learn out of my love for Hashem yisborach, as it says, "And you shall love Hashem your G-d ... and these words ... shall be upon your heart ... and you shall speak them."

Yud(10). [Meditate.] I am preparing myself to be a vessel for receiving the holiness of the Torah.

Yud-Aleph(11). [Kavannah-intention.] I am learning in the name of All of Israel - Kol Yisrael - may it be for their merit and their salvation from all manner of harm.

Yud-Beis(12). [Kavannah-intention.] I desire and accept upon myself to study with great effort and toil - for the words of the Torah are acquired only with great effort and toil.

Yud-Gimmel(13). [Kavannah-intention.] I am learning for the sake of sanctifying His Name in His world.

Yud-Daled(14). [Prayer.] I give thanks and praise to Hashem yisborach, for His great gift of opportunity to study His holy Torah at this time.

Tet-Vav(15). [Prayer.] I pray before Hashem blessed be He, that He should help me in my learning, and that He should enlighten my eyes in His holy Torah. Amen.
