  Touching All The Senses

December 2013
Hello from the President,

Happy holidays from Special Haven! It is with great joy that we announce the completion of the multi sensory room in November of 2013! It has been a little over 2 years since a few of us got together with a vision to build a state of the art multi-sensory room for our special needs community in East County. There have been both struggles and victories along the way, as we kept moving forward with the dream.  I am so proud of the all the board members who put in so much of their time to see this dream become a reality.  All the meetings, the events, and the planning was all worth it when I saw the completed room the other day.  I am also amazed with all the wonderful people who believed in our dream and supported us over the last couple of years.  The idea of a multi-sensory room is hard to grasp sometimes, but you all stood by us and I want to thank you all and let you know that, WE DID IT!!!
I know that it is the holidays and we all have so much going on and so many things to do.  We find ourselves looking for special gifts, planning parties with family and friends, cooking huge meals, and decorating our houses, that we don't always take to the time to sit down and take a deep breath and just enjoy the moment.  We at Special Haven would like to take this time to offer our gift to the special needs families in East County, our multi-sensory room.  Please schedule an appointment, drop by, or plan a trip to come see this amazing room.

Thank You,
Vicky Dunn

Welcome to Our New Multi-Sensory Room!

Special Haven, after our spectacular renovation is a magical place for special needs. It is a soothing and fun place to play. For myself, as a caregiver and special needs parent, it is a wonderful place to bring the children, and a great resource to introduce to the families I serve. The advanced training we received as parents and board members will help us utilize Special Haven to its full potential, as a therapeutic, fun, and a learning environment.

The Benefits of a Multi-Sensory Room
by: Ana Chuey

Some of us don't mind the daily outdoor sounds and smells such as the birds chirping in the morning, the smell of freshly cut grass, the taste of that first cup of coffee, that feeling of sand between your toes on the beach, or maybe the amazing orange colored sky at the end of a beautiful day. Some things make us feel great while others don't appeal to us. As a typical person you are able to take in want you want and block out what you don't need. For those with special needs, it can be overwhelming and challenging to process sounds, scents, touch, taste and see certain things.  Learn more

As we celebrate our grand re-opening and marvel at the transformation of Special Haven, we the Board of directors and also the greater Special Needs community must also look to the future. Our ongoing goals include serving the community at minimal cost to the user, maintaining the quality of the experience, training the teachers, caregivers, parents and continuing to spread the word. In addition to upkeep, we will have the ongoing expense of rent and utilities, and the great responsibility and privilege to carry out our promise, and keep our doors open for the long term.
