DCCA has had a busy summer working on ABCA matters, attending community meetings and planning our meeting line up for the year ahead.

We have a special meeting planned following the Labor Day holiday. On Thursday September 7th, we invite you to join us at the Chastleton to discuss crime with the Chair of the Police Association. Bring your concerns and friends. 

Our monthly meetings, held on the first Monday of the month will resume in October on the 2nd.

Gregg Pemberton, Chairman of the DC Police Union, will address the current crime wave from the police union’s perspective and offer his view on what can be done about crime on our streets.

Members and non-members are welcome to attend.

S Street Dog Park Temporary Closure
DC Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced that the dog park will close temporarily. This long-planned returfing work will be begin on Tuesday, September 5th and will aim to re-open by December.

Councilmember Pinto's office shared that the project will replace the current turf, address drainage issues, and replace damaged sections of the fence. And offered a few FAQs based on their
 
What type of surface will it be replaced with? The same type of material as is currently used.
 
Will the fence be replaced?: Portions of the fence in need of replacement will be replaced, but not the entire fence.
 
Will the benches that are not dog-friendly be replaced? Will the trees be replaced with better shade trees? Not as part of this project, but it is on the list for FY25 budget requests.
 
When will the park reopen? Scheduled for December 2023 reopening.

DC Black Film Festival
The upcoming DC Black Film Festival showcases compelling stories about our diverse community.

The festival, now in its seventh year, runs Aug. 18-30, with in-person screenings at Miracle Theatre on Aug. 18-19. This hybrid event has the option to watch virtually through the end of the festival.

DC Jazz Festival and a Local Haunt
August 30th - September 3rd

The DC Jazz Festival will take place over labor day weekend - the shows will take place in and around The Wharf with performances on multiple outdoor and indoor stages. Click here for ticketing and other details.

DC Preservation League and staff members of The Menkiti Group are hosting a webinar to learn about the ongoing Bond Bread/WRECO redevelopment project happening on the Western edge of the Howard University campus.

The Bond Bread/WRECO site is home to two existing historic structures; the 1929 Art Deco Bond Bread Factory, and the 1930 Washington Railway and Electric Company (WRECO) Garage. You can join the webinar to learn more about the proposed rehabilitation and overarching goals of the project, which seeks to preserve the cultural heritage of the Pleasant Plains neighborhood and enhance the historic qualities of the buildings themselves.
