A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
|
|
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Happy Feast Day!
Today is the perfect occasion to reflect on the virtues of our Holy Father Dominic. St. Dominic was a man of deep prayer, spending entire nights before the Blessed Sacrament. He was a man of charity, pleading with God for mercy on poor sinners. He was a man of action, enduring many hardships to preach the word of God. He was a man of gentleness, correcting his brethren with kindness. He was a man of great faith, with unwavering trust in God. These are only a few of our Father's many virtues. As his sons and daughters let's strive diligently to imitate him.
On this special day, let us ask St. Dominic's intercession, that we may fulfill our vocations faithfully.
Have a great day!
God bless you,
Mrs. Denise Harvey, O.P.

SAINT FOCUS: ST. DOMINIC OF GUZMAN
|
|
Founder of the Order of Preachers, commonly known as the Dominican Order; born at Calaroga, in Old Castile, c. 1170; died 6 August, 1221. His parents, Felix Guzman and Joanna of Aza, undoubtedly belonged to the nobility of Spain, though probably neither was connected with the reigning house of Castile, as some of the saint's biographers assert.

ST. DOMINIC'S FAVORITE BOOK.
|
What was St. Dominic’s favorite book? As a scholar and preacher, it would have to be one that reflects the wisdom and goodness of God, one that he could return to again and again without exhausting it. Maybe one of the Gospels? Or the Conferences of St. John Cassian?

THE TEARS OF ST. DOMINIC.
|
The tears of our Holy Father Dominic never fail to move and challenge me. There is something haunting and mysterious at the thought of a man weeping in the solitude and silence of a sleepless night on the altar steps. Entering a church at night to find someone in such a state of fervent and distressing prayer is a moving and troubling experience.

THE ADVENTUROUS LEGACY OF ST. DOMINIC.
|
Dominic, it is clear, possessed a strong instinct for adventure. He was daring both by nature and by grace. Dante calls him ‘il santo atleta,’ the holy athlete. No matter how difficult or unforeseen the challenge of the hour, he was not afraid to take enormous risks for the sake of the Gospel.

Pope Honorius III issued two documents which established the Order of Preachers. Religiosam vitam (included below) was promulgated on December 22, 1216, followed shortly thereafter by Gratiarum omnium largitori.

We look to St. Dominic, great Light of the Church and Doctor of Truth, and to the saints of the Order, that we may be of use to the souls of others.
This novena is prayed by our community as we approach the feast of St. Dominic. We invite you to pray with us, asking the intercession of St. Dominic on behalf of the needs of the world and for your own personal intentions.
