Vaccines against COVID-19 are becoming increasingly available in Tennessee, across the country, and globally. We put together this newsletter to share information about the vaccines, how to check if you're eligible and make a vaccination appointment in Tennessee, and to share information about equity in vaccine distribution, including implications from the recently passed American Rescue Plan.

Equity in Vaccination

COVID-19 has had disparate effects on different demographic, ethnic, and economic groups (CDC, KFF). Now that vaccines are rolling out we have the responsibility to respond to the inequities the illness has produced, and ensure that the rollouts themselves do not exacerbate disparities. What does the American Rescue Plan mean for Tennessee?
  • Not only does the American Rescue Plan provide additional stimulus payments directly to Americans in need and ensure that COVID-19 vaccinations and treatments are free of charge for all, but it also provides $900,000,000 in incentives for TennCare expansion to cover more Tennesseans.

Community organizers will focus on inequities in health insurance
While 11% of the Tennessee population is uninsured, in rural counties the numbers are much higher. Rural communities of color are particularly underserved, with rates as high as 44% uninsured. THCC has a plan to change that. Two Community Organizers, Thomas Savage (pictured, right) and LeLann Evans, will work in select rural counties to help people enroll in health insurance.
“I look at Health Insurance as a Civil Right," says Savage. "Experience taught me that working families are just a pay check away from economic disaster, and I know first-hand the importance of every family having access to good health care."
