Communication Advisory - Provincial Games

Attention:  Special Olympics Ontario Communities, Clubs, Volunteers,
                Athletes, Partners, Associates and Families

In conjunction with Special Olympics Canada and Chapters across the country, the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games Medicine Hat 2022 have been cancelled. While this outcome brings about disappointment for many, most assuredly the athletes, it is the correct decision for the times.
In part, this conclusion was reached by all Provincial/Territorial Chapters who cannot foresee the ability to host safe and successful Provincial/Territorial Games in 2021. In discussion with health officials, sponsors and volunteers, the embargo on programming and fundraising has set us back in all areas.

Our focus now, and for the foreseeable future will be activating the athletes and getting our programs operational in a manner that is safe and secure for everyone. Programs are beginning to open slowly but are completely focused on the engagement of athletes and skill development.

As Special Olympics Canada stated in their release, our emphasis will be grassroots programming and support. In the weeks ahead, you will be receiving information that describes how Ontario plans to showcase this local focus.

Future qualifiers and provincial level competitions will be placed on hold until the pandemic lifts and confidence is restored. Our plans will adjust accordingly, taking us from where we are today and leading us back to a better future.

We are all very saddened by this news but recognize that we need to work together with others to determine and focus on the critical priorities at hand. At this stage that is the health and wellness of our families, friends and the community at large.
