Hidden in the Archives: Black Women Labor Organizers
Thursday, June 8, 2023, at 4:30 -5:30 PM
Goldwin Smith Hall, Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium

Historian Janette E. Gayle will highlight three Black female labor organizers of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU)—Floria Pinkney, Lillian Gaskin, and Eldica Riley—who helped shape early twentieth-century labor organizing.

An assistant professor of history at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Gayle works at the intersection of African American history and labor history and explores the interconnected histories of migration, civil rights, and workers’ rights. Her current book project, Sewing for Change: Black Migrant Dressmakers and the Struggle for Rights in Early Twentieth Century New York City examines the role that Black migrant dressmakers from the American South and the British West Indies played in the civil rights and labor movements as they transitioned from home-based production to the garment industry and membership in the ILGWU. Interested in the interplay between fashion and politics, Gayle also examines how Black women in the early twentieth century used fashion to claim personal and political agency. She is a member of the Community Education for Transformation (CET), a group based in Geneva, New York, committed to bringing about racial and social justice through education.

After the talk, please join a reception in the Hirshland Exhibition Gallery, Level 2B, Carl A. Kroch Library.
