(Special Weather Advisory banner)

01.25.2026

Dear Neighbor,

As the snow transitions to sleet and freezing rain, we're sending you this weekend Advisory to ensure that residents remain safe and informed about the multi-agency response to this weather event.

Image of a plow at work, and a message from VDOT that says "Stay home, we'll take it from here."

First of all, the County and VDOT are encouraging residents to stay off the roads if possible, so that crews can continue plowing and treating the roads, and also for your safety as some roads remain very slick. VDOT crews also need the ability to respond to an emergency if necessary, clearing the way for emergency personnel to reach an incident.

Fairfax County government offices are closed tomorrow, Monday the 26th, but my staff and I will be available to respond to weather-related needs. Email braddock@fairfaxcounty.gov or call us at (703) 425-9300 with any questions or concerns you may have.

You can follow Fairfax County's emergency information blog for local impacts and resources related to the weather.

Through our collaboration with VDOT, we have been receiving regular updates. VDOT has 1,759 pieces of equipment active right now in Fairfax County, conducting plowing and treating the roads behind the plows.

You can follow the plows' progress at plows.vdot.virginia.gov. The map now includes "breadcrumbs" to see where a plow has been for the past six hours.

VDOT has also answered some Frequently Asked Questions on their Winter Weather page.

For a full list of weather-related resources, read my January 22 Advisory.

Update from VDOT

VDOT reports that crews will continue to make several passes on all of our area roads this evening, tonight, and into the next several days ahead. Rock salt and abrasives will be used as needed as temperatures, conditions, and roadways allow.

Tree crews are at the ready throughout Northern Virginia into Monday with wind gusts forecast near 30 mph through the evening. If you notice trees or large branches blocking the roadway, please notify VDOT by submitting a ticket with the location and cross street at my.vdot.virginia.gov.

Stay informed about road conditions by visiting 511.vdot.virginia.gov. Crews will continue to make several passes on all of our area roads this evening, tonight, and into the next several days ahead. Rock salt and abrasives will be used as needed as temperatures, conditions, and roadways allow.

Update from Dominion Energy:

The storm has the potential to cause significant and widespread power outages across the area this evening and tomorrow morning as ice accumulation builds.

Customers impacted should prepare for a gradual, multi-day restoration effort. Icy road conditions and blocked roads from fallen trees may make some areas difficult to reach, which will extend the power restoration effort.

The Dominion Energy app is the easiest way to report outages and track restoration. If you lose power, there are three easy ways to report your outage and track your restoration time: 1) Dominion Energy mobile apps, available for iPhone [apps.apple.com] and Google [play.google.com]; 2) Dominion Energy website; or 3) Call 866-DOM-HELP (866-366-4357).

Please stay away from downed poles and power lines. If you see a downed pole or wire, please report it by calling 866-DOM-HELP and stay at least 30 feet away. The line could be energized and dangerous.

Stay safe and warm out there!

Yours in service,

Supervisor Rachna Sizemore Heizer
