Regarding the Boy Scouts of America
This is an important notice from the ELCA churchwide organization regarding legal considerations having to do with the Boy Scouts in America—specifically those associated with congregations.
Dear Rostered Ministers and Congregations of the North Carolina Synod,
First, let me say: I do not and cannot give legal advice to congregations.

Second, if your congregation has ever hosted—and especially if they actually chartered—a Boy Scout Troop, you should be aware of a very important deadline of Nov. 16 to file a proof of claim. This has to do with sexual abuse claims against the Boy Scouts of America and the bankruptcy filed by them earlier this year (and how your congregation could well be liable). The document below was prepared by ELCA Legal and, while it is also not legal advice, I suggest you look at and get it to appropriate leaders in your congregation as quickly as possible.

Be particularly mindful of the November 16 deadline to file.
Walking with you,
The Rev. Timothy M. Smith
Bishop, North Carolina Synod
