Peter J. Wuebbens
The Reverend Peter John Wuebbens, age 85, died Saturday November 7, 2020 in Hagerstown, MD.

Peter was born July 24, 1935 in Watersmeet, MI, the first son of the Reverend Hilbert J. and Virginia C. (Kelly) Wuebbens while his father was the chaplain for a federal program during the depression.

He is survived by his brother, David Wuebbens and wife, Louisa of Little Falls, NJ; four daughters, Stephanie Wuebbens, and husband, Jon Jameson of Princeton, MA, Karen Wuebbens and husband, Steve Thompson of Oaxaca, Mexico, Joan Wuebbens Snader and husband, Ken of St. Louis, MO, and Ellen Wuebbens Truiett and her husband, Philip of WV; one son, Bruce Wuebbens and his wife, Margot of Durham, NC; and five grandchildren, Erin Wuebbens of Durham, NC, Mark Wuebbens of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Brandon Truiett and his wife, Amber of WV, Turner Truiett of WV, and Basil Wuebbens of Salem, MA. He is also survived by a number of cousins, nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his wife Anne (Bland) in 2011, after 53 years of marriage. 

Peter graduated from Capital University in Columbus, OH, in 1957. He then attended Trinity Seminary, also in Columbus, and graduated in 1960. He completed graduate work at Union Seminary (N.Y.), Harvard Divinity School, Weston College, and the Interfaith Institute at Wildacres.

He was ordained as a Lutheran minister on April 4, 1961, by The Eastern District Synod of the American Lutheran Church, and served calls at St. Paul’s Lutheran, Waldo, OH, (1961-64); Peace Lutheran, Wayland, MA (1964-68); Our Savior, Edison, NJ, (1968-78); Good Shepherd, Charlotte, NC (1978-91); Holy Trinity, Leesburg, VA (1991). 

He was a “Founding Father” of Lake Wylie Lutheran Church, Fort Mill, S.C., 1979-80; American Lutheran Church-Lutheran Church in America Joint Communion Practices Committee, 1974-76; Chair, Martin Luther Camp Corp. (Koinonia) Highland Lake, NY, 1974-78; American Lutheran Church’s Eastern District Council, 1976-80; American Lutheran Church’s Southeastern District Council-Convener, Mission Secretary, 1984-87; North Carolina Transition Team, Chair, Structure for Mission-Ministry, 1986-87; Dean, Southern District of North Carolina Synod, 1988-; Chair, Charlotte Area Clergy Association, 1985; Planning Committee, GCAR Interfaith Institute at Wildacres, NC.

In his retirement, he was a member of Grace Lutheran in Boone, NC, and also served as the pastor for a blended Episcopal/Lutheran parish in Newland, NC. 

He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Anne, in Blowing Rock NC. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
