INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE FOREST!

Young Forests

This International Day of the Forest, Winnakee is highlighting the importance of young forests.

Many animals need young forest and shrubland for foraging and breeding, including rare and imperiled animals like the New England cottontail and golden-winged warbler, as well as more abundant wildlife.

Forests today also face unprecedented challenges that hinder their natural regeneration.

Winnakee recognizes that forests require timely stewardship action if we are to sustain them into the future.  Learn more about our young forest work.

The Disappearing Young Forests of New York – And Why We Need Them

If you take a walk through most of New York’s forests today, you’ll notice something missing—young, regenerating woodlands. We have old trees, mature forests, and even open fields, but young forests—those dense thickets of saplings and shrubs—are becoming increasingly rare. So, why is this happening?

Join us for a discussion about the co-benefits of restoring young forests:

We’re excited to welcome Todd Waldron of the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society, along with our own team—Trevor Keough, Conservation Forester, and Jen Adams, Director of Land Stewardship.

We’ll dive into the habitat needs of the American woodcock, a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in NYS found on Winnakee properties, as well as explore forest management techniques that creates beneficial habitat for an array of wildlife species dependent on young forests.

Species like bobcat, ruffed grouse, yellow warblers, indigo buntings, and even box turtles are all affected by the loss of young forests. But with the right habitat management, we can help reverse this decline!

Our team will give examples of ways to create, enhance and maintain young forest habitat. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how we can all play a part in supporting these vital ecosystems.

Speak to a Conservation Forester

There are a number of silvicultural techniques that can help regenerate young forests, but success depends on site conditions and proper implementation. That’s why working with a professional forester is key. They can help develop a management plan tailored to your land and wildlife goals. Winnakee is here to help!
