Beware of a new scam where fraudsters order iPhones and try to get nonprofits to pay for them. Under the scheme, scammers use nonprofit tax codes to order phones and have them delivered to the unsuspecting nonprofits. Next, they pose as AT&T, claim the phones were sent as a mistake, and promise that a UPS courier will arrive with a prepaid shipping label to collect the mis-shipped phones.
If a nonprofit follows the instructions, the phones are sent to the scammers, and the nonprofit foots the bill. A fraud warning from the
Wyoming Nonprofit Network said if you are sent merchandise you did not order, return the order directly — do no use a mail courier. Then call the supplier directly to explain the situation and file a police report.
