Take Your Garden to New Heights!

There is nothing like a vertical accent to break up the flat horizontal lines of a garden. With their interesting foliage and the added punch of flowers; vines can add excitement, texture, architectural structure and interest to garden borders.  Adding a trellis with a flowering vine to a blank wall space helps to break up a dreary backdrop and adds pizzazz to a patio or deck. This year we are pleased to offer a unique selection of trellises to go along with the best selection of flowering vines we have ever offered.

We have the ever-popular:

Mandevillas in pink, white and red.

Flowering black-eyed-susan vines in yellow, sunset oranges and white.

Honeysuckle in several colors and morning glories in traditional blue and red and purple.

Looking for something different? We are excited to be able to have Ruby Hyacinth Bean, Bougainvillea, Kiwi Vine, False Hydrangea Vine (in pink!), Passion Vines, Malabar Spinach, Scarlet runner bean and many varieties of clematis in a rainbow of colors.

Many of these vines are perennial and will give you years of color and a punch to your garden plantings.

Look closely, this potato relative has purple spines on its leaves. We have others with orange spines. Oh and if that's not enough, fuzzy leaves & purple blossoms.

New Arrivals this week

  • Wendy's Wish & Amistad salvias - both favorites of yours & of hummingbirds. Yes, Vermillionaire firecracker plant (plenty in stock) is beloved but these salvias are BIG, shrub-sized growers.
  • Since our last newsletter, we've restocked Hot Plants twice. We got some of what you've requested like 'Elegant Lady' African mallow and other goodies that sold out so quickly. And some additional fragrant, dramatic, sweet, unusual temptations too.
  • Last year or two we've had a difficult getting Tricyrtis aka toad lilies. Nice for shade gardens. 3 kinds landed on Wednesday from Connecticut, finally.
  • Dill - just a few pots arrive early Friday during the Dill Plant Shortage of 2022. Sometimes demand outstrips supply. Like cilantro, dill seeds should be sown directly into the garden every few weeks for a steady supply. Both herbs bolt or "go to seed" quickly in hot weather and are simple to sow & grow. Dill seeds - we have those.
  • An East Falmouth customer generously shared her experiience with Proven Winner tomatoes Garden Gem and Garden Treasure. Both were the only varieties of many that she planted that beat the blights last year. We have both.
  • Packs of annuals, maybe the last fresh jag. If you missed out on the cutting zinnias, do check out our colorful blends of seeds from Renees Garden Seeds. Zinnias are easy from seed.
  • Our most outstanding hosta array ever! Old favorites and many, many new ones with stunning foliage. From minis to monsters. We love ferns as hosta companions for their contrasting fine foliage.
  • Re-stocked the panicle hydrangeas introduced last year that you have embraced: Firelight Tidbit, Little Lime Punch, Limelight Prime. Good ol' Annabelle and Incrediball smooth hydrangeas too.
  • And naturally we have fresh color of all kinds for those empty pots & empty spots.

Don't be misled. The pink reblooming hydrangea 'Let's Dance Arriba' will transition to rich violet-purple in our naturally acidic soil. You can hasten the change by applying sulfur or aluminum sulfate to your plant. If you want pink blooms, keep the soil sweet with regular applications of lime. Not all hydrangea blooms are changeable. Most oakleaf and panicle hydrangeas age gracefully, turning varying shades of pink.

Who is loving their FairyTrail Bride cascade hydrangeas they got last year? We've had a fresh delivery of some beauties in decorative pots. What a great gift. We will have starter sized ones in a couple of weeks.

This totally new type of hydrangea was initially labeled hardy to zone 7. Now they are tagged zone 6 so they may be winter hardy here. If you want guaranteed blossoms, wintering in garage is best.

We Plant Window Boxes

...and planters and hanging baskets.

Bring 'em in (empty of old soil & plants) and we'll fill 'em up. Usually within a few days.

Our designers Carol and Lynn will guide plant selection with you so you'll enjoy flowers every day until fall frosts.

Best Wishes, Cam

Last weekend we all had mixed feelings as we said "happy trails" to our coworker. We're pleased that he's headed west for exploration and adventure. We'll miss his helpfulness, his even temperament, his muscles. He posseses amazing plant knowledge for one not yet 20 years old. More qualities than we can enumerate. One shortcoming? He never read these e-newsletters! Despite that, we will miss his amazing smile.
