The quaint town of Union sits at the southern bend of the Hood Canal located on the western side of the Puget Sound. Union faces west with its southern Olympic Mountain views and calm waters. It's location offers consistent colorful shows of dramatic mountain sunsets. This alone is a draw for artists and photographers as well as the many seasonal vacationers who come to visit. Seattle Children's Hospital's Prestin Kuppe Guide collected artwork from the Best of the Northwest artists. Their donations will be auctioned off to raise funds for Children's Hospital. Thank you to the artists that generously donated.

The rest of the weekend offered lower admission prices, tasty meals from Seattle food trucks and a stroll down the isles to see unique artists. This was a great shopping experience and truly a fabulous event!

The Best of the Northwest Spring show is offering an opportunity for new artists in the
Emerging Artist Program

Are you an Emerging Artist?

An emerging artist is an artist that has mastered the basic techniques in their art form and who is attempting to launch a professional career in the arts or an artist taking their established career in a new direction.

This program is open to all media (except jewelry) and to artists that have not exhibited at the Best of the Northwest shows in the past.
One or two winners are selected, given a booth at the Best of the Northwest Spring show and paired with a NWAA legacy artist mentor. The mentor will be an experienced BNW artist who can share their expertise and help the emerging artist prepare for the event by being available to answer questions and “showing them the ropes” of participating in this premier art and fine craft show in Seattle.

NWAA Video Gallery
The NWAA video gallery will be a collection of educational and other videos exploring the artistic process. They will be available to view from the NWAA website later in January.

One of the first NWAA produced videos features an interview and demonstration from Seattle glass artist, Dan Friday, made by artist and videographer, Kuria Jorissen.

Dan is a member of the Lummi tribe and has exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the Northwest. He was also a contestant on "Blown Away" Season 3 on Netflix. You can see more of Dan's art and other local native artist on NWAA Cultural Connections feature HERE

Video production is made possible because of a grant from 4Culture. We would like to thank them for their generosity and support of the arts. Find out more about 4Culture HERE

Painter Terri Arino talks about her process
My mornings always start at O'dark thirty with the help of a hot cup of coffee and managing the office. Once daylight comes, I'm either painting, building product, or packing for a show well into the evening hours. My favorite days are spent outdoors, hiking and photographing reference material for future compositions, but I don't get those very often. When I'm working inside, I love listening to music. My jam lately has been the 80's channel. On any given day, you could pull up the drive and hear Ella's Summertime from Porgy and Bess, or the soundtrack from The Bill Chill blaring out of the windows.
When outside, my soundtrack is always birds! I adore the excited cacophony as it bubbles up with the morning light and the visuals of feather flashes that scamper through the trees compliment the chittering. There are many varieties including a huge flock of wild turkeys that I do feed - several times a day. Those low flying whirly birds sleep in my Ponderosa Pines every night and shamelessly beg at the front door for seeds.
I paint in all mediums, with my recent favorite being watercolor. I have been using watercolors infused with honey lately, I love the incredible richness and vibrancy of the colors as well as the ability to do layers of washes. I’m excited to start mixing my own paints, using locally sourced honey. I can easily switch between mediums, having started out using oils in my early 20’s and have honed my skills over the years in many different styles.
My inspiration relies heavily on nature. I love to work in the natural light and check the sky often for cloud formations dancing across an ever-changing palette. The outdoors has long been where I regroup and center and routinely drag small bits of everything home in my pockets for reference material. The 'who' first started with my mom, having grown up amid paintbrushes, pastels, and ceramics. She was always fearlessly creating and figuring out something new! The wonderfully fun part for me was getting to see that same drive to create in my two sons.
Taking something from hobby/passion to a successful business takes deep commitment overall and specifically, commitment to yourself. To know that you gave it everything and built something from the ground up. On the flip side, I've also watched my style become quite a bit more fluid with more vibrant, bold colors. I crave 'crispy’ detail and have found that I've also become equally passionate about tension and movement in my compositions.

The best advice I've gotten as an artist has come from my mother! She told me once, "Never underestimate the value of a dirty paintbrush." Those muddy tones are what complete paintings and fill in all the little, tiny, wispy, dangly things. It adds all the middle layers of depth much needed to make the painting look complete.

DONATIONS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Northwest Art Alliance's mission and goals include expanding general and targeted outreach to all communities and artists to better serve artists' needs and help sustain support for their vocation. NWAA connects artists to the broader community through it's shows. Artists would not have this critical exposure without this connection.

Northwest Art Alliance normally produces 3 or more in-person shows each year with a total of 996 artists represented during the last 3 years (unduplicated count). NWAA has pivoted to virtual shows and other features to help artists sell their work during the pandemic. NWAA needs community support and donations to continue its mission. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to this non-profit organization and click here. Thank you for continued support of the Best of the Northwest shows!

And don't forget! You can donate to Northwest Art Alliance as you shop! Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the charitable organization of your choice. It is the same Amazon you know with the same products, same prices, same service.

Support your charitable organization by starting your shopping at smile.amazon.com.
