Emerging Artist Program

In the process of returning to normal from Covid, Northwest Art Alliance has brought back the Emerging Artist Program this season. Emerging artists are the future of tomorrow’s art, but it’s not always an easy path. We designed our Emerging Artist Program (EAP) to help ease the journey from emerging artist to successful, experienced artist-business person.

"Hold The Dream For What It's Worth"
by Lee Morrison

2 EAP winners were chosen from a talented group of applicants. Painters Lee Morrison and Magali Lenarczak will be featured with booths at the Best of the Northwest Spring show. Make sure you stop by their booths when you're at the show and say hello.

“Art by Design”
at the Seattle Design Center
was held Feb 3-4, 2023

Partnering with the Seattle Design Center in conjunction with their annual Designer Showroom "Sample Sale”, the Art by Design show was held in their beautiful atrium.

As a first-time event, there is always room for growth. The artwork exhibited was truly stunning and we want to thank all the artists who participated and lent their talent and time to this effort. It was a slow start to the show, but attendance picked up on Saturday, and we ended on a high note. NWAA and the Design Center have already started discussions on ways to improve the event. Next year, Art by Design show and the Sample Sale will be held during Georgetown's art walk, Art Attack, Feb 10th, 2024. We look forward to growing the event and developing it into a strong winter art show.

"Surfing"
As a child I wandered in open areas and parks in my first home, Vancouver BC. Weekends were often spent in Stanley Park. The mysterious paths winding through giant fir and cedar trees, ponds, a lagoon hosting a swan’s nest all nurtured a young imagination. Wildlife was plentiful, including a huge emu housed in an open enclosure, part of the park’s modest zoo.
At the end of our walks, I would be given a paper bag containing bread crusts to hold up for the huge-eyed, long necked creature with its enormous aggressive beak that looped over the fence. The great bird would drop its head into the bag and bat it around snatching the dry crumbs. It was a terrifying and awesome experience. Out of an abundance of such moments a deep love and fascination with birds and the natural world infused my being.

Eventually my passion found expression in block printing. Inspiration for each piece is rooted in experiences and features a bird observed in local parks, my own backyard, the ocean beaches or camping in Eastern Washington.

"Fleeting Moments"
During the pandemic with travel restricted and a world suddenly reduced, pen and ink offered an escape as I sketched from photos. Occasionally an inspiration for a block print grows from a photo. I’m currently carving a block based on a photo taken by a niece snowshoeing at Mt Rainier. A perfect setting to include a couple of Clark’s nutcrackers. Whatever the inspiration, my block prints continue to focus on the multitude of birds and habitats of the Northwest. There is a truth in the eye of the bird, wonder in its flight, grace to be found in its presence.

A Note from the Board
OUTSIDE THE LINES
(MARCH 2023)

The first of our accomplishment stories rolled out last month to great reviews and feedback from readers… so we are back with a second chapter. Thank you for your suggestions about the 2023 Art Gala planned for November 10, 2023.
With a goal focused on “Utilizing Technology” in 2022, two videos were produced as the beginning of a new direction for NWAA bringing awareness to people, skills, and art forms. We will soon have a YouTube channel to share our videos, as well as those offered by some of our partners or artists. One of the videos produced by Alex Strazzanti showcased the work of NWAA with narrative done by Kathy Whitman, President, who says “It was fun to experience the behind-the-scenes development of the video. It brings visibility to much of what we do. After viewing the finished video, I am proud to be part of this amazing organization". Click HERE to see video.
Alex, who is the new NWAA Organizational Coordinator, also produced a new lead that will be part of each NWAA video. Alex enjoyed these projects and offers "We have many topics to cover that will help artists thrive. I am excited about working on more of these in
the future."
glass fish by Dan Friday

A second video tells a visual story of glass artist Dan Friday which was produced by Kuria Jorissen of Call of the Mountains Photography. "It was a privilege getting to showcase the process and passion behind the art form of Dan's work. It's my pleasure to showcase the hard work, thoughts, and feelings that go into the work that artists do".

Donation Drive
DONATIONS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Northwest Art Alliance's mission and goals include expanding general and targeted outreach to all communities and artists to better serve artists' needs and help sustain support for their vocation. NWAA connects artists to the broader community through its shows. Artists would not have this critical exposure without this connection.

Northwest Art Alliance normally produces 3 or more in-person shows each year with a total of 996 artists represented during the last 3 years (unduplicated count). NWAA has pivoted to virtual shows and other features to help artists sell their work during the pandemic. NWAA needs community support and donations to continue its mission. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to this non-profit organization and click here. Thank you for your continued support of the Best of the Northwest shows!

NWAA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
