BNW Gallery Artists
When you visit the Best of the Northwest Fall show, make sure you see the Gallery.
Here are a few of the artists-
Clothing by Dorthey Skea
Dorothy Skea is an artist/designer who specializes in truly one-of-a-kind designs. She hand-dyes silks, linens, wools and pieced them into fabrics and garments are then made from these fabrics. With her background in tailoring (trained in Hong Kong) , she designs and drafts her own patterns that flattering on most age groups and on most body types. Her fine finishing in her designs reflect her years of tailoring experience.
Jewelry by Maria Langer
My philosophy is simple: take beautiful stones and make them wearable without taking attention away from them. After all, can any of us really improve on what mother nature has done?
I acquire or make high-quality gemstone cabochons and use solid sterling silver and/or copper wire, strip, and sheet metal to create custom frames, prong settings, or bezel settings so they can be worn as pendants. My goal is to keep the stone as visible as possible and let their settings complement rather than hide them. For many pieces, a coordinated beaded chain can really highlight the pendant's stones.

Glass by Marcus Harper
My recent kiln formed glass creations utilizing glass powders that are layered, blended, and incised. The heat of the kiln creates surface tension which opens up the incisions of the glass powders. This process requires 3 different fusing and slumping kiln cycles. The results are truly unique and wonderfully colorful.
Woodwork by
rePly Furniture creates unique, hand-crafted furniture, home accessories and art from salvaged plywood collected from local cabinet shops. Most shops throw away a lot of plywood and I take as much as I can use. Through a process established over several years, the plywood is shaped, sanded, glued and put together in a number of different ways to create one of a kind, eco-friendly, heirloom quality pieces extolling plywood's unique and normally unseen attributes. It's hard to describe with words and needs to be seen and touched to be fully appreciated.

Scarves by Kitty Kincaid
K.A.T.'s Silk Scarves are hand dyed and produced in limited quantities for that one-of-a-kind unique individual. It all starts with wax resist. Three fabric dying processes create the patterns:1. Indo Batik, 2. French Painting, and 3. Italian Marbling. The best perk is that garments designed by K.A.T.'s are all washer/dryer safe!
Thank you for visiting the Artist Attic Sale

Helpful Artist Tips
Windsor and Newton easel
How to find a stable, durable easel.
Should be easy right?

I recently made the decision to upgrade from my homemade easel to a professional studio easel. My requirements were straight forward, and I thought, easily met. First, that it be completely stable. Second, built to last. Third, able to handle canvasses from small to large, and forth, have adjustable working height and angle. I assumed this would be easy, I quickly found out I was sorely mistaken.

I started by looking at options in a local art store on Capitol Hill. They had a range of large H frame designs that had all the adjustability I wanted. Upon inspection however I found that none of them were even remotely stable. One poke and they would wobble back and forth for several seconds, even after I tightened them down. This, unfortunately, is representative of the vast majority of easels on the market. They are nearly all made of thin pieces of beach wood and built with tongue and groove joints held in place with a single bolt. This is not sufficient. Most designs rely on screws applying pressure on the wood to keep adjustments, and canvas shelves in place. On the beach easels I looked at I could see dents in the main mast everywhere the canvas shelf was tightened. This is clearly not durable secure or. Also, the tongue and groove construction of the base was not rigid enough to provide stability. Tightening the bolts did not fix this because the beach just compressed and loosened. I continued my search online and found many competing companies, each making the same disappointing easels.
Whether you are looking for a very basic easel for a young artist or a high-end studio easel, its number one job is providing a stable working surface. Do not waste your money buying a fancy looking beach design that will never perform well. At first glance the widely available beach easels look appealing. They offer many more features for a given price. In practice however, you will be much happier with a basic design that provides a stable working surface, then one with a bunch of bells and whistles that wobbles when you look at is sideways.

In Memoriam
Julia Clara Garrels

Northwest Art Alliance would like to express our deep sorrow for the passing of a long-time Best of the Northwest show artist and beautiful soul, Julia Garrels. Julia succumbed to cancer recently. We truly loved her beautiful metal artwork, her amazing spirit and easy smile. Our hearts go out to Julia's family and all those that were close to her. She will be missed!

Julia Garrels somehow knew how to create joy. Just walking into her booth was a joyous experience. It was alive with colorful little birds, bees, butterflies and all manner of woodland creatures and it was always a happy place.

A talented, imaginative artist, Julia had a perpetually friendly smile and was always ready for a chat and a laugh. She was the one whose booth was constantly busy with people who returned again and again for her art and for the light and joy they found there.

The world somehow seems different without Julia. But we haven’t really lost her. We will remember her when we hear birds singing, when we see a squirrel, or a bunny or a fish. We know that her light still shines and will continue to glow. The echoes of Julia’s joy will never truly fade away. As long as it exists, Julia’s art will always bring us happiness.

Northwest Art Alliance's mission and goals are to expand general and targeted outreach to all communities and artists to better serve artists' needs and help sustain support for this vocation. NWAA connects artists to the broader community through the operation of shows. Artists would not have this critical exposure without this connection.

Northwest Art Alliance normally produces 3 or more in-person shows each year with a total of 996 artists represented just in the last 3 years (unduplicated count). NWAA has pivoted to virtual shows and other features to help artists sell their work during the pandemic. NWAA needs community support and donations to continue its mission.
