What is a Router?
A modem can connect a single device to the internet. However, if you have multiple devices or wish to use them wirelessly (Wi-Fi), you'll need a router. Spectrum introduced WIFI 6 to all Internet customers earlier this year. The change to WIFI 6 has been rolled out gradually to those customers who wanted or needed this upgrade. If you are happy with your router today, there is no reason to rush to change to Wi-Fi 6.
Why do I want Wi-Fi 6?
Wi-Fi 6 delivers faster speeds for streaming and allows more devices to connect to your router simultaneously. Coverage is often wider. Wi-Fi 6 also provides a more secure protocol than its successor, Wi-Fi 5. The combined dual radio provides seamless connection between the 2.4G and 5G frequency bands. Previously, routers logged each device into one or the other when you set up Wi-Fi connection. If you have many devices and some are located at a distance like HD cameras located on lanai or garage, then you might benefit by the change to Wi-Fi 6.
Is there a downside?
While most people will see improvements, only some of the newest connected devices can take full advantage of the additional WIFI 6 performance features. Also, some of the 2.4G devices – notably thermostats - have difficulty connecting to the combined band radio of the WI-FI 6 router. If this happens one needs to call Spectrum Community Support so they can set the connection remotely. Again, if you are happy with what you have, no need to change right now. There is no cost to upgrade to WiFi 6.
How do I know if I have Wi-Fi 6?
If your router looks like this oval (see below), it might be. The best way to be sure is to check the back. If the label reads “WiFi 6 Router” (see picture below), you are good. The change to Wi-Fi 6 has been rolled out gradually to those customers who wanted or needed this upgrade.
Note: All new installations and repair replacements will be Wi-Fi 6.
