Thanks for joining us at our two kangaroo events at our Waterloo store last month!
Rookie, our newest baby kangaroo, met with over 250 customers the first weekend in April. He was a trooper!
Then our Easter Kangaroo came out to greet kids with special treats on the day before Easter. We've had fun celebrating our marsupial mascot this month!

#MilkMonday continues through May
|
#MilkMonday is continuing into its second month
and runs every Monday through June.
With thanks to the Black Hawk County Farm Bureau, this initiative
asks grocery shoppers at
Hansen's Dairy and
Fareway
Grocery stores to round up their
total purchase to the nearest dollar, which will
provide Hansen's Dairy
milk to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
Between northeast Iowa Fareways and Hansen's Dairy stores in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, nearly $4,600 has been raised in April! Fareway corporate has also pledged to donate $2,500 in matching funds.
Hansen's Dairy is thrilled that so many people have been generous in opening their hearts and wallets to provide milk for the Food Bank. We are blessed to live in communities where people see the importance of providing nutritious food to their neighbors.

Dani Christensen and family |
The May Customer of the Month is Dani Christensen
of Waterloo.
The Christensens have always purchased milk from the Hansen's Dairy store in Waterloo. "With a big family, I buy a lot of milk, so I stop in weekly," Dani says.
The family loves drinking chocolate milk after sports and weightlifting workouts.
"One son likes to blend your 1% milk with his protein shakes. It's part of his daily weightlifting regimen," Dani says.
But the family has their sweet tooth too. "
I've made homemade caramels using your heavy cream for years, and my family won't let me go a Christmas without making them," Dani says. "
My youngest daughter's favorite ice cream is your raspberry lemon drop. She requests it for her birthday."
Dani says her family loves the taste of Hansen's milk.
"Thanks for providing such delicious and nutritious dairy and straight-from-the-farm products," she says. "Our community is better because of your dairy!"
Thanks, Dani! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $24 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our
Facebook
and
Twitter
pages.

Our May Cow of the Month is one smart cookie.
Lobster
is one of our Red & White Holsteins. She is 4 years old and has had three calves in her lifetime: two heifers and one bull. She's currently milking a whopping 135 pounds a day!
Lobster is a very curious cow who is always paying attention to her surroundings. If she senses something is up, she is the first to leave the area. Lobster is a very nice cow to work with, just a little high-strung. Red & White Holsteins typically are that way. It must be in the genetics. Aren't all redheads a little crazy? :)

Cooking with Hansen's
|
May is here, and that means fresh asparagus! I have about 10 favorite ways to fix fresh asparagus. Here's a versatile soup you can enjoy piping hot on a chilly day or as a chilled smoothie when you're looking to cool down. It can be a meal on its own without meat, or as a colorful side to complement any plate.

Creamy Asparagus Soup
Serves: 3-4
Prep time: 15 min
Cook time: 30 min
Total time: 45 min
Ingredients
- 2 bunches (about 2 lbs) asparagus spears cut into 1 inch chunks**
- 1 bunch (about 10 pinky-sized) green onions cut into 1/4-inch chunks**
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups Hansen's Dairy Milk*
- 1 cup Bongards Shredded Cheddar Cheese*
- 1/2 tsp salt (optional)
* Items found in Hansen's Dairy Stores
** Items found in Hansen's Dairy Stores in season
Directions
- Place asparagus and onions in 4-6 quart sauce pan; add water.
- Bring to heat on medium boil until soft (about 15-20 minutes). Remove from heat.
- Ladle into blender or food processor. Blend until smooth or pureed. May have to do in batches. (Could use potato masher, but will have larger vegetable chunks.)
- Add milk and return to heat for 5 minutes or until starting to boil. Remove from heat.
- Ladle into bowls, top with cheese, and enjoy!
- For a cooler soup or smoothie, don't heat after adding milk and enjoy right away.
