Partner Family Spotlight: Leticia
|
Leticia Dye has declared war against cockroaches! They have laid claim to the small two-bedroom apartment she shares with her children despite her artillery of bug sprays, bug traps and bug bombs.
"We have tried everything," she said. "When the kids start screaming, 'Mommy, mommy!,' I come running with the bug spray. When I get up at night, I turn on the light and start spraying like crazy."
The apartment also has other problems. The windows won't open and close properly, and the carpets are filthy and make her son, Miguel, 8, who has asthma, and Jonathan, 6, who has frequent nose bleeds, very sick. Her daughter, Carla, 6, Jonathan's twin, shares a room with her brothers. Until now, Leticia didn't think she afford a better place for her family on her salary as a housekeeper at the University of Kentucky. That was until she learned she qualified to become a homeowner through Lexington Habitat for Humanity. Now, she and her children are looking forward to moving into a healthy, energy-efficient home where they will each have their own bedroom.
"We are so excited," she said. "The kids can't stop talking about it. They have told everyone. The whole neighborhood is talking about us getting our home. The kids have been looking for ways to decorate their rooms."
A native of Mexico, Leticia moved to Lexington in 2010 after living in Somerset for a few years. She still has older children in Mexico. Her family and friends are all happy that she will soon live in a better place.
Leticia said she can't wait to plant roses in her front yard and tell her kids they can go outside to play in their back yard.
"My children mean everything to me," she said. "Just to know that they will have a nice place makes me very proud and very happy."
Leticia is excited to start construction on her home in just two weeks time. She will be building on Millbank Road alongside sponsors the United Methodist Churches, Tenmast Software and SRC of Lexington. |

Strengthening Neighborhoods
|
A few weeks ago we partnered with the LFUCG Parks Department, the Police Department and Center Point Church to make a difference in two neighborhoods off Russell Cave Road. Over 150 people operated chain saws, chippers, rakes, weed eaters and wheel barrows to clear brush out of a wooded area in Martin Luther King Park. Others signed in volunteers, handed out water and grilled and served a delicious lunch to the workers. This project to improve the safety and beauty of our community was a wonderful example of how people can come together to make our world a better place. In the words of Center Point Pastor, Tim Parsons, we were "Jesus in the skin." MLK park sits between two neighborhoods where Lexington Habitat has and is making a significant difference. Twenty years ago we began building houses along Gerald, Winburn and McCullough Drives. Last fall, with the support of Thrivent Financial, as part of our Love Your Neighborhood initiative, we did home preservation work on 14 houses on Gerald Drive. You can see the backs of many of them from the Park. You can also see new construction on the first home of 30 we will build on the other side of the Park in the Brookfield Chase neighborhood.
Though close in proximity, these two neighborhoods have offered us very different opportunities. Though sturdy and well-built, the homes in Winburn do not have central air or energy star certification. Many of the mortgages are paid in full. The Brookfield Chase homes will be energy star plus certified and, per neighborhood restriction, will have some brick on the front and a garage. We were blessed to be able to purchase the Brookfield Chase lots at foreclosure for less than we typically pay for infill lots. This neighborhood will be a great place for our homebuyers to raise their families and the children will be able to play in a beautiful park with the grandchildren of some of our original homeowners!
